The date does not look like my humble example, I do not think it is genuine.

Oh, didn't see that link.
And oh my, yeah that date looks completely wrong in any and every way possible. There's no way that thing would grade at PCGS.

I don't know what it is, but I do know what it's not. What it's not is a genuine 1871 Indian Head.

I have fixed the post so the Obverse picture shows now without having to click the link. The Reverse looks close enough to fool me but that date is all over the place

I think its a fake or altered date. Here is my 1871 IHC. Compare the dates.

When I first clicked on this post and saw the date, that's all I needed. Hope you didn't pay too much. More than likely of Chinese origin.

It's strange how they did such a good job but it looks like they didn't even try with the date at all. I only own 1 Indian cent and don't know anything about the series, but when I saw that date it looked way off.

zeevg, where did you get this coin? You should be able to get a refund. And even though its not the best of news for a first post.

zeevg, Being the original person in this thread to call the coin definitely fake, I also want to apologize. I have now looked at the picture further and I believe I see 3 other more subtle problems with the coin that would indicate it is being not genuine. Since the date is obvious enough, and since I don't want to help those faking such coins with feedback, I won't list them. With the IHC series, luckily the mint changed the size, form, and slant of the date and numbers all the time. Fakers can't seem to figure it out and it makes it easier to identify those fakes. This is clearly a modern Chinese fake. It's actually not a very good one, however, by their current standards. If this was made 10-15 years ago, I'd say they did alright, but the ones they are usually putting out these days can be pretty scary. This one is actually pretty wrong (mostly with the date once again).

was this an ebay purchase? if it was I would check into sending it back and getting a refund through ebay's Buyer Protection. That way you can learn something and also don't have to take a hit for it. I am not sure how much you paid for this coin but if it isn't returnable I hope it wasn't much. I also want to you to the forum and hope this doesn't turn you against collecting coins no matter what the outcome is

Zeevg, Agreeing with hesgut. IHC are my pet coin, and the first thing that jumped out at me was the face. I'm not even sure I can explain exactly what's wrong in terms of "font slant, position" the way others here do, but the forehead and the eye are "off" in relation to each other and to the field of the coin. May I recommend that if you want to start out an IHC set, you hit ebay? There is a seller there named coinman2000 who starts a bunch of lower-value IHC every week at 99 cents; I picked up an 1862 in F from him/them for $4 + shipping. (Mods: I don't know this seller, but I am confident that what I got is genuine, hence the suggestion.) In these lots you will encounter "problem coins" (in the sense that some are cleaned or corroded and none listed at this price are high grade), but they'll be real and having some low-value, genuine IHC you can study will be a great help without putting a ding in your pocketbook. You can also stick around here (we'd love to have you!); I've been here for something like six months at the outside, and I've learned volumes. Folks here are incredibly knowledgeable and willing to answer questions.
