Lock PL, imho. Nice coin for so cheap. Gradewise, I'd need better photos.

It does look PL to me. Looks MS but better pics would help.

Another shot with different lighting -

1880-Morgan

This coin presents something of a typical Morgan conundrum - wear or weak strike? There're certainly flat spots in the hair, but they remain on the frosty side and haven;t been obviously rubbed bright, nor is there much impairment elsewhere on the devices. So the call of UNC versus AU is a bit complicated and subject to an individual interpretation of the story the surfaces tell. Was it out there for a short time and then set aside or returned to storage, or is everything you see attributable to how well it was struck and bagmarking? I think this is just the sort of coin that if submitted for certification multiple times to different grading services, would obtain results that might well not be uniform. I will not be surprised if opinions on it expressed here are diverse and yet equally adamant.

I'm guessing 64, PL if you can get that same reflection from the reverse. That said, this is one coin I'd want multiple images at very high resolution to offer a confident opinion. I'd really want to see the hair and talons in excruciating resolution.

64PL. Very nice coin. Very well may be DMPL, because I think those are 3+ inches of reflectivity...?

Actually 3+ cm in that photo. I haven't really tried to determine if it the clarity of the reflection stretches out to that DMPL standard. Next time I get it out, I'll have to see.

The biggest thing in PL or DMPL grading is the chatter marks...within the field.. this seems to be the deciding factor in many a coin I see as it gets into the higher grades.

I think this one is a PL coin.. and the face is tremedous...from the coins previous photo's.. but as Dave's said I need some better close ups for a real determination of MS 63 to 65...I think you got a great bargon...I just bought a PGCS 1880-s MS64+ for a great deal...ut am having a time of my life to photo it..to show it to you all...
with the limited phot's and angles I think the cheek is worn a bit as well as the hair is... as well as the hair above the ear.. the 1880's are well known for sharp coins...so slight wear is a point of reference to grading specifics. FOr the Price..YEA....I just bought a few PL for some cheap money...in the end we are happy campers!

Some last comments from me on this one -

Since I snagged this specimen, the pawn shop owner (a younger guy who inherited the business from his father, who knew his coin stuff) has wised up a bit, and if a Morgan looks any good at all, it's no longer going into the castoff tray, but has been often getting sent off for certification. The problem is, he still hasn't developed the knack for assessing his wares accurately, as I see that too many of his submissions have come back with "details" annotated grades. So now he's beginning to on his own overgrade anything that looks decent and put in out raw at a consequently inflated price. So I'm despairing of ever repeating something like this again there, although I'll still stop by and do whatever business I can with him. Funny thing is, when I bought it, he had just put it along with some others in the tray right in front of me, then actually commented as I was paying that it looked proof-like. Go figure.
