Mark me down as an incredibly happy Canadian , proud to call this country home. Just think if we lived in the US, we could all have guns, expensive health care , Homeland security, oppressive tax regimes compliments of the IRS, paranoia, Obama, and Hilary Clinton. Life would be sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo bad! ,

At least it's a Free Dominion. The nation was a Dominion prior to confederation from my understanding.

I certainly didn't take it as sarcasm....
Look I'll be the first to say that our neighbours to the south of us are absolutely fantastic.. I love the people, the cultures, the geography...
But I love this country just a little bit more... the day that changes... will be the day I move.... which makes me think there must be a reason why so many people come to Canada... it`s a pretty darn good place to be...

Here's another good reason to be thankful for our southern neighbours..
When "both" of our subs are in the shop for repairs,..we can always be thankful for the protection provided by the huge # of nuclear subs patrolling their,..and our coasts..
That's another reason to be thankful for the protection provided.. .

The name Canada originated early 1500's by the Iroquois (Kanata) in what is now southern Quebec along the St. Lawrence. FYI.

yes because we will need nuclear warfare to protect ourselves against whom, and when the "protectors" declare war on a country we will be caught in the middle of it all. To stay on topic, here is a link (it may or may not have already been posted) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Name_of_CanadaAnd yes I with M_d_in_guy

I think we have it great here in Canada.
The US has been good to us in providing us with 'big brother' protection in the world, yet we are a separate country in that we don't have the negative aspects of US life.

i don't understand what everyone is talking about "big brother" "protection" and "nuclear submarine"? we are our own country, in which we have our own national anthem, own currency, and our own government. If hsit hits the fan, why would the US protect us?

The way I understand it is that Canada was considered a Dominion of the British Commonwealth until the 1980's when the new constitution was passed that severed those ties. Canada did not have full technical sovereignty until then but in practice pretty much had for decades.
It is now considered to have full sovereignty and on an equal footing as the UK within the Commonwealth instead of subservient to the UK. This makes Queen Elizabeth the Queen of Canada (as well as the other realms) while before she was (as far as Canada was concerned) the sovereign by the fact that Canada was legally subservient to the UK.
I don't think the legal status of Canada had any effect on coinage but I think it did on currency.
