Nice work ... completing your Walker set. I still need several. Picking another series, can be a hard choice. Many of the classic sets will have several harder key/semi key coins. The Mercury dime set, is not a bad set. Depending on which brand album you buy there is three main coins. 1916D, 1921 and 1921D. Seems like there is one brand of album that needs a 1942/1 and 1942/1D. Indian Head/Buffalo nickel has several expensive coins. And most of the early coins are hard to locate in better grades. One set I have been working... slowly working, is 2 1/2 gold Indian set. It is a short set and only has one hard date coin. It looks great in a Capital coin holder. Or some will do the set in graded slabs. The set, not counting proof coins, is 15 coins. Each coin might run from $190 to $300, except the 1911D which lists $565 in G4 to $4500 in AU. I have 6 different dates right now .. but for me it is a long term project. The coins are about the size of a dime. Here is a example.

That gold Indian is a beautiful coin. I might check that out. The Mercury dimes are one of my favorites. I will probably do one set at a time. I get focused on a particular coin. You know any gold coin is probably a deal now.

GR58, what kinds of grades/prices are you looking for in your set? I've been doing pretty extensive research of Buffalo nickel prices lately, so I could probably give you a decent idea of how that will go.

I bought 1927 and 1934-S Peace dollars in EF condition today for $54 from Gilder Coin Shop in Tampa. I traded in a 1925 Peace in EF condition, so I guess I paid and 73 dollars in fact. The owner of this shop is always willing to dicker on the price and takes trade-ins as well. I always seem to have duplicate coins I need to trade off. I am closing in on the 1928 and 1927-S, and 34-S. The 1928 is the only coin that goes for the bigger bucks IMO. If I can get a coin in EF condition I will take it. Why is the 1934-S so expensive? The mintage is higher than the 1927, 1927-s and the 1934. Was this a coin that was melted down?

terry8835, You do not sound like a collector who would be satisfied with 'just' a complete collection. You want a higher grade 1938-D Half than the one you have? (That was a clue!) How about a traditional gold type set? Four coins each: Liberty Head 2 1/2, 5, 10 and 20 And/or Indian Head 2 1/2, 5, 10 and 20 Readily available for a price but guaranteed to be 'doable' which gives a sense of satisfaction. Mercury dimes and Buffalo nickels are an option, but I found them to be unsatisfactory in 'just' good/very good. So I sold them to support MY early passion: Barber dimes. BUT, if a certain series is speaking to you (YOUR passion?!) and the search for full horn very fines does not deter you then you should go for it. I sold all of my Buffaloes except for a single 1913-S Type II in VG-8. It is my type Buffalo. And I am a geezer too (soon to be 64).

Yes, I like silver coins of 20th century. The gold coin sets you speak of also interest me. How can they not? I like to collect sets that I believe I have some chance of finishing before the dirt nap. I like the coins I used to see back in the 1950's when I was a child. The Liberty Standing quarters, Mercury dimes, Buffalo's etc. How difficult is it to collect the Saint-Gaudens before 1920? I am not going to rush out and spend 1600-1800 bucks on a coin but those coins intrigue me. That is a collection I don't think I could ever complete. Just having a few would be nice. I think of the old blues song "Dying Crapshooter's Blues" where he says he wants to die with a $20 gold piece in his pocket so he will die "Pat". Hey, now that is neat.

Congrads on that complete set. Now as to what next. DO NOT go for Mercury dimes. I want them all. just kidding of course. My favorite coin. I now have 12 sets of those and almost all full. Only sets 11 and 12 not quite full. And as to what other coins I collect. All of them. I collect any US coin and try to fill Albums.

Nice going. If you want to stick with the half dollars, a Barber half set can be put together if you settle for the AG-G grades for the rare ones. I am also partial to Proof Franklins, and if you are so inspired PF-CAM Franklins.
Good Luck and thanks for posting.

Need to check my coin boxes and see what I have left in the WLH set. Seems I just buy whatever feels right and store in my numerous boxes of goodies with intentions of filling out my Danscos at some point in time. Lazy I guess, but also intersting when I'm rifling through a box and find coins I don't remember ever having acquired.

Which are the most neglected coins that are collectable? I like to collect coins that are currently discounted by other collectors.

Do most of you guys collect multiple coins at the same time or just one or two?I have a few projects going at the same time, that way, when I can't find anything for one of them I am usually able to find something for one of the others. I find that it's a little less frustrating than having to wait weeks, or sometimes months in between acquisitions. Right now I have these projects going: Liberty Seated Half Date Set in the PCGS Registry (The Poor Man's Liberty Seated half dollars). Canada - Victoria Fifty Cents in the PCGS Registry (The Poor Man's Victoria Fifty Cents). Set is 100% complete but I am looking to upgrade when the opportunity presents itself. These coins are very scarce and very expensive in problem-free grades, which means that I'll never own some of these coins in grades better than VG. Dansco - Mercury dimes, in AU when possible. Dansco - Canada Type (1858-1952). Dansco - Canada Type (Elizabeth II). Gardmaster - Canada Five Cents Silver (1858-1921). Gardmaster - Canada Ten Cents (1858-present) Whitman - Newfoundland Type

Those Indian Head gold coins seem unique to me. However, there are always a couple of coins in the set that are so expensive I can't see how most could ever complete a set of them. I bet what happens is a collector gets all but the few really expensive ones and his/her collection remains forever incomplete. All the Saint-Gaudens coins are just beautiful coins, but all drift off into the realm of the unobtainable for average collectors. If I were ever willing to spend $20,000 on a coin it would spend its life in safe deposit box. However, I bet these coins will be the ones that really appreciate over time. I am not sure I have that much time. A complete collection of Mercury dimes or Buffalo nickels in AU condition would be amazing. The Liberty Standing quarter is also a coin I like, but I see that older ones in AU condition would be expensive and probably difficult to even find. Some of these coins were struck in a way that assures the dates and lettering gets worn off unless they have been in collections for the last 90 years.

Congrats on completing that set. Sounds like you have a real nice collection going there. Anytime I hear someone completing one of the "no longer in circulation" sets like walkers, etc., I always think wow what an accomplishment. Not an easy task.
