That was my first thought. I am going to ask him about the positive feedback his friend left for the $3 Indian. My only guess is that he left the feedback before he got the bad news. I will ask about it at my next opportunity, maybe tomorrow. If a TPG can figure out who submitted them can they just claim something like "no way!? I've been scammed because I bought them thinking they were genuine!" ? If not it seems we may see some justice. Apparently NGC knows now and the cert page say to contact them if you have one. At least 1 have already been switched again to "not genuine". It should be pretty easy to find the submission it came from id imagine. I think it's astounding they were able to get so many fakes in real holders.

should we make a separate thread to deal with the counterfeit in real holders side of where the threads going? Because otherwise I don't feel this is a dead end thread circling the drain. The third party graders have only started to look into it. Still lots of unanswered questions and mysteries. PCGS has just said they are looking into it as well. I'm sure anacs has been notified as well.

Well, thinking a little more about this seller, I wonder if the problem coins were also purchased through craigslist. Hopefully an investigation by the grading companies will lead to the original culprit or culprits.
I would still like to see photos of the OP coin taken by @hoosiergator. I think there are enough surface anomalies in the fields to possibly determine if they are the same coin.

Update: I have kept quite as the police were contacted. The gentleman I sold the REAL coin too was telling the truth and he freely admits that when I contacted HIM about the coin on ebay he was suspicious that HE was somehow the victim of a scam. Once we came to realize that were both suspicious of one another we realize that this jerk on ebay was the scam artist. I still have no idea how he got the pictures to make such a good counterfeit. We believe at this time the coin in the ebay listing was its own counterfeit and not a stolen picture. I never sent a picture like that. I no longer own the genuine coin but the real owner has filed an IC3 report and did contact ebay Trust & Security.

Hoosiergator. How long ago did you purchase the coin that you sold (how long was it in your collection before you sold it).

I've bought many coins from this site, just to resell. Occasionally, I'll receive "nice flip" or such. And there was the gentleman sophisticant who messaged me " lowball the heck outta me to make a killing" I just met his opening bid & had no other players. Some people.

Thanks for the update. It's scary to think there is fakes out there in real slabs. I guess that's why your buy the coin not the slab. But it still worries me, I know I'm not educated enough yet to distinguish between authentic and counterfeit coins.

I feel the same way. I'm still learning to ID raw fakes, but if a major TPG doesn't catch them I definitely won't.

Does anyone here believe it's possible that in the near future there really will be no way to distinguish between real and counterfeit? It seems with modern technology growing exponentially (not to mention 3D printing taking off), we may have a major problem for this hobby lurking right around the corner.

I'd bet it's happening now.

I've been thinking that if only a few fakes have been caught after being graded by respectable grading services like NGC, what if there are lots more certified fakes that are still under the radar? For all we know, 5% of the certified coins in our collections could be fakes that are so good we can't tell.
