I like both pics. If I bought it I would be happy with appearance.

I agree that the seller's photos look contrast enhanced. But it's a wonderful coin, and you could argue that your images and the actual coin look more natural. If you paid a reasonable price, I'd be happy.

I honestly don't know much about coin photography, but I wonder if the fact that the seller took pics of the raw coin whereas yours is through the slab might make a difference. Either way, you've got a pretty nice coin there.

I don't really understand your disappointment. The coin appears to be a very nice EF-45 with original surfaces. The seller may have enhanced the photos to bring up some sharpness, but if you look at the coin under a strong light, at the right angles, I'm sure you will see the same sort of look.
Overall I'd be pleased with this piece if I had paid "fair market" EF-45 money for it.

I'll refrain from giving the OP some tough love and just say we have become a nation of whiners. The coin is in a TPGS slab w/CAC sticker. IMO ebay should refuse to let you return the coin and give you a two week time out from any more bidding. If you were to try and return another properly graded coin I would ban you from ebay forever! I have NEVER received a coin that looked as good as the photo! Sellers should make the coin look its best. I have low expectations and they have been met.

I think $290 is in the ballpark for and XF-45 PCGS graded 1875-S Trade dollar.

Quote: I feel misled because the seller intentionally created an enhanced photo to sell the coin. That's just a blind guess. I'd bet $100 he either used different lighting than you or scanned them (my feeling, shadows are exactly right for a scan) and did nothing intentionally. Tons of sellers only have scanners to work with.

My issue was that the coin was much darker in hand than the seller's photos. I have no issues with the quality of the coin or grading. I did pay a fair market price of $290 for the coin. This coin on the dark side will stay in my collection. Thanks for the comments.

There is one of the infelicities about purchasing from ebay and/or other auction sources ; coin returns should be an integral right of any purchase transaction but becomes exponentially more difficult because of the venue. You had no opportunity to view the actual coin in hand prior to executing a bid and therefore had little protection against an inaccurate image. A reputable seller should be morally inclined to issue a refund less perhaps the cost of return postage. The term "misrepresentation" is too strong due to the certified nature but correctness of grade doesn't always translate into satisfaction. For many years prior to the advent of the internet most experienced collectors with established dealer affiliations were extended the courtesy of "approval" service whereby coins could be examined under the potential purchaser's favored viewing conditions prior to committing to a purchase ; risking little more than the cost of return postage.

I would try to guess why the sellers pictures are some what lighter ... or why. Could be lighting, camera or many other things.
I would have no problem with the color of the coin in your picture. To me that is what a original XF coin would look like. It might take going to a nice AU grade to get the look you like.
When I look at the coin, what draws my attention is the mint mark (S). Does the mint mark looks different in hand. Just curious if the mint mark took a hit, maybe it is just how it looks in the picture.

I agree the seller's images appear to be scans. These type of images will never come close to actual in hand look.

I have purchased more coins that look BETTER than the ebay photo than look worse.

GR, the mint mark shows in hand as shown in photo. It appears to have taken a hit.

NSS-52, opening an ebay package with a coin is like that box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get.
