These pictures were toward the beginning of sorting. We did find a few more good dollars. But there was a lot of Mid to lower grade dollars. There will be more sorting tomorrow. I am sure I will picked out a few coins to purchase. The 1895 is a S mint, I do need that one, and I did see a 1903 O that is still a empty hole in my Dansco. And it never hurts to pick up a few more Mercury dimes.

I am still thinking about this collection. Seeing how other organize their collection, always gets me thinking about mine. This collection was organized fairly well. But it really didn't give much information for the family members it was passed down to. There were three binders full of silver dollars and half dollars. Most of the coins were only labeled with the year. For example there were three Carson City Morgans that had no mention they were better value coins .... just the year no mint mark. I hope when I do passed down my collection, I have all the more valuable coins separated, with some, estimate of value. I get the feeling these coins were all pulled from circulation. But that is something we can't know for sure. I am looking forward to looking through the rest of this collection in the morning.

On one hand, this is very interesting and exciting. On the other, it has me thinking of my own mortality.

I am with the Coinguy... I see people get stuff looked at at my LCS and I try peeking without being too conspicuous. Usually it is silver/better halves/dollars that aren't my priority but every now and again something fun comes in... have fun going through that! Always cool to go through an old collection!

I am lucky in that I have a good relationship with my LCS, and when a collection comes in, and is bought, I can often look at it right away.

Most of the stories I hear that open up that way are stories that are sad and/or depressing.

GR58,
Do the sellers that sell to the shop that you work for do much research on their numismatic inheritances?
While shopping in local shops over the years I've seen a few numismatic inheritances being peddled, in one instance it was very clear that the people had no interest in the collection and wanted it gone as fast as possible and that they had stopped at the closest shop listed in the yellowpages and had done zero research.

Joe ... from what I have seen the last several years. Most don't do any research.
Some will sort coins. Like put wheat cents into envelope or baggies by year.
Some will make a inventory of every coin, with prices they looked up online. Of course most have no idea of grading. So prices are often from the right side of the price guide .. but when we see the coins ..they should be looking at prices from the left sided.
Sometimes it is a older wife, who ends up with her passed husbands collection. We had that today. Has a lot of coins. She would bring some in, ask about what their worth. Take those coins to the car and bring in more.
Many of the coins she has, the value are tied to silver or gold prices. She was torn over whether to sell now .. or wait for prices to go up. Then worried prices will go down. Very hard for us, with customers like this. We would not want to tell her what she should do. We would not want to tell her the price will go up or down ...
She did not sell today ... but she will be back.
