Natural toning progresses. AT is most commonly caused by heat, chemicals, or a combination of the two.
Blotchy uneven toning is almost exclusive to AT.
This is AT.

Artificial toning.
With judicious application of heat at the right temperature and the right amount of time, this result is reproducible.
Some skill development is needed.
A kitchen electric or gas stove is all the equipment that is required.

Wade: true you can anodize silver using sulphur to get a toning effect but I never knew you could anodize tombac or nickel.. what's the process?

To anodize any metal you would simply make it the anode in an electrochemical cell. Whether any surface modification occurs would depend on the electrolyte, current/voltage settings, temperature of the electrolyte, duration of treatment, and to a lesser extent the geometry of the electrochemical cell.
Many metals, not simply aluminum or silver, could be anodized to create a surface reaction/artificially colored patina but it takes extensive experimentation to dial in on a suitable combo.
