Quote: The lighting is discoloring it disproportionately from the 98% rest of the obverse. That looks to be a possibility as the "VDB" gets brighter from left to right as does the ring of light next to the rim. Maybe from a camera flash?

Get a slabbed piece.....more piece of mind and easier to sell later

Quote: Looks 100% genuine to me. The next best thing to buying a slabbed coin is having @nss-52 say that it looks good. Sounds like you are proceeding with an abundance of caution and are an informed buyer. Good luck with the auction! Send us a pic when you have it in hand.

I don't like so many marks on this coin. I would pay $500 for it at most ONLY with a guarantee of authencity.

Agree genuine and Die Pair #2. Also respectfully suggest it has been cleaned.

MM and VDB are both questionable. The MM appears smashed and it's impossible to authenticate using the die chip in the upper loop. PASS!

Well, you have opinions that it is genuine, questionable, cleaned, too many marks, don't pay over $500, buy only if the seller gets it graded at their expense, and you need a guarantee of authenticity. What are you going to do? About an hour left on the listing.

I will tell you this, if I were selling this coin and if a buyer tried to put strings on an auction purchase, such as "it must be graded/certified at my (the seller's) expense as a condition of purchase", I'd tell them to go pound sand.
I would, however, agree to take it back within a reasonable period of time, if the buyer got it graded/certified and it came back as not genuine.

This is a genuine VG example, clearly cleaned, easy to buy but will be very difficult to resell.
It's crap. Pass on it.

I am with BadThad on this. MM and VDB are questionable.
Others have provided this info....don't buy an 09 S VDB unless it is slabbed. Sorry bud.

Congratulations on getting a 1909-s vdb cent. I put an early bid in on the coin. If I won, I planned on getting it certified since I want a certified 1909-s vdb for my collection. I have been very happy with the seller with prior sales over the last two years.

the obverse looks VG8, reverse F12. I would net it for value at VG10. I also believe the coin was cleaned and die paring #2. there are few things as pointed out but I think its legit.
I bought mine in 1970 and finished the set about 40 years later with the 14D so I can relate to waiting a long time to finish the set. its quite fulfilling to see all of the slots filled in that album so I know how you feel.
I have thought many times to get mine slabbed but cant stand the fact that I would have and open hole in the album as they all belong together.
