Actually I've thought about this before . ''If I had to do it all over again '', what would I put together . And it's one of two choices ; An NGC- 66/67 full set of WLH's ,or one of my favorites : Low mintage U.S. classic coins , in VF to EF. I'm talking 500,000 or less .  |

I would not be able to think about anything else until I rebuilt an Ike set and the 7070. After that, who knows. |

Probably not the proper forum for this question, but I have to ask; just what constitutes an Ike set for you, jbuck?

At the very least, the standard 32 coin set, which is what I have in my Dansco 8176.
However, I have recently started a second set (slabbed). The list has ten additional items: the 1972 varieties, the 1990, 2013, and 2015 issues.

Most of my collection would be considered "type", and it's still my objective. The only true sets I have are Franklin and Kennedy halves, and Peace dollars -- and those are still in progress. But if I had to start over, I'd go for $5 Indians. There are more of them than the $2.50s but at a more appealing size. That also presumes I'd have enough money and time to go for the set, but it would be nice. |

Fun idea for a thread! I would start with my 7070 and although it is not completed I would start there then on to my 1800's type set and fill it up with nice matching grade coins. The only Morgans I have are a couple in my type sets so I may at least start a date set or some type of Morgans. Or at least a few really nice ones. But the focus of my $'s would be used to replace the heart of my collection which is my 1 oz. world silver coins and my ASE Caps albums. I have a lot of mint sets and proof sets as well as silver proof sets. I would probably just replace the silver proof sets. I also have a lot of Dansco / Caps albums that I probably would not replace at all. Interesting thought process. Might pick up a few more silver art bars, both plain and enameled. |

Great question.
For me, I am doing this already. Except I did not have a fire, thankfully.
But in the last 12-18 months I have completely changed how and what I collect.
And in doing so, to fund a lot of my new collecting way, I parted ways (sold) all the stuff that no longer interests me. It is gone and I have money in its place. So it is a real life example of the question in theory but without devastation of fire.
I got rid of all my US series and Danscos of anything uncirculated or clad. Believe me, that was like quitting something or something. Complete collecting lifestyle change. I kept my circulated silver sets. That is it.
I got rid of all but 2 sets of mint sets, proof sets and silver proof sets. I want to keep 1 complete set of everything so that I could have all my Dansco books filled back up if I really wanted to (at least from 1965 on).
Not sure why I am hanging on to the second set. Probably will be sold soon.
So I went from a US only Dansco collector to a collector of 2 things (and the third I just acquire):
1. World Silver bullion series at 80% of my focus. Almost exclusively bullion bu, not proof.
2. Modern US $1 commemorative.
3. US silver series circulated coins, mostly quarter, half and dime. But I only buy these already complete when I get great deals. I don't actually collect these in the coin collecting sense of things.
So if I had a fire today and got the cash...I would just buy all the same junk.

Many of the coins in my collection are of mostly sentimental value. In many cases I didn't even buy them (but got them for free). Not sure how that will be calculated.
That said... country count, actual attempts on (non-silver, non-ultra-rare) Russian type set, probably some other stuff I couldn't think of immediately.
Maybe I'll actually try to repeat that one guy's quest of getting a 20th century coin from every applicable country. I probably won't get anywhere near enough money, however.
P.S. If we actually had a house fire large enough to affect all of my coins, my collection would be among the least of my worries.
I'd be far more worried about more mundane things like "did any of my documents survive" and "how and where can I get money to afford some food and/or a place to sleep".

For me, probably one of three areas that I've often thought about collecting, but never did:
Judaean (ancient Judaean, that is)
Ptolemaic bronzes
Or the large, figural bronzes of the Artuqids or Zengids - particularly the Zengids of Mosul

Well I must have done something right because I would pretty much rebuild exactly where the bulk.of the value of my collection is.
I would forget the world coins and world notes but rebuild my ancient Greek silver and my British banknotes.
Any left over money would go towards another high end watch.
