I think it is just the green you get with old oxidized bronze. If I remember correctly it actually protects the metal. I would verdicare it and put it in a nice 2x2. XF/au detail. I have used verdicare on coins like this. Sometimes it turns them dark bronze other times, not so much.

@Alpha

If you don't have any Verdi-Care yet, definitely get some. It can do great things to certain coins in need. It may seem a little pricey but, that little bottle goes a long way.

Still, as you've done, acetone should be the first step to remove contaminants. Then, maybe some light manual removal options. The Verdi-Care I ordered from ebay came with several hardness levels of wood picks and a towel to boot! Then, Verdi-Care per the instructions.

Thank you all, I'll shop for Verdi-Care in the morning, when my brain is a bit clearer. In the meantime, the acetone soak will do what it can.

In my opinion this coin spent some time in the ground, and
is most likely a metal detecting find.

I agree with the acetone and verdi-care treatment.

Pretty sure it spent time in the ground.

Verdi-Care on the way, and no, I did not know a CCF member made it. That would explain why Amazon doesn't have it, but at least I got almost $3 in ebay Bucks (8% promotion, and I splurged for the cloth and thongs).

I hadn't considered "in the ground", I guess because the green is so vivid and consistent, except where it's not. That makes me feel better about the soak, fearing that paint (or possibly a bad plate) would come off in a less appealing way.

From a value standpoint, the coin is not worth the effort or materials used to clean it. Also, any value the patinated coin has for a curio would be ruined by cleaning.

My bet says, just leave it as it is, it's a lovely green patinated coin and well worth keeping just for that reason, alone.

You can buy a nice clean copy for a couple of bucks. Your green coin could strike someone's fancy and sell for 10 times that. Clean it, and you've got another cleaned penny, about worthless.

I collect greenies because I just like the look. I've tried to bring one back but it's pretty much impossible. Almost all of the greenies I've bought have been ground finds.

I agree with it having been in the ground, I have found many of them metal detecting that look just like this.

That's not what I'm seeing. I think this one (w/o discoloration) looks AU. You'll spend at least $10 for one close to that, probably more.

In my experience, those are the best ones for gaining experience in preservation techniques. You have to start somewhere to get the knowledge so when a true gem comes along that needs care, you know what to do and what not to do.

The materials actually used on a single coin add up to very little.

I know there is a joke in there but this is a family friendly site. All I will say is did you mean "Cloth and Tongs"?

"Tongs", you're right. I'd say I always get those mixed up, but the truth is I always forget the distinct spelling for this case. One of these days I'll get it right but then it wouldn't be as funny.

That aside, the discussion of whether to use the Verdi-Care is interesting. The good news is that it will take several days to arrive, during which time the acetone will do whatever it can, and then I can decide. For now, I'm leaning towards "not", but I don't mind having shelled out for it as I have other pieces in worse condition that I can experiment with and which might benefit, to a point.

So I let this soak in acetone for about a week (certainly longer than it needed, perhaps longer that it should have) and gave it a rinse in clean acetone. It doesn't really look any different, and I think that's fine. It's in a 2x2 now, and will probably stay there.

The Verdi-Care arrived some time in the middle of the soak but I'm inclined to not use it. I have some other pieces I can experiment on.

Keep us up to date! Tend to agree the coin isn't worth the cost of Verdi-care and the time involved (forget AU money), but a fun science experiment.
