This is a prime candidate for a ez est dip to remove that horrible splotchy toning.

If the spotty toning can be ignored I see it as AU-something (pretty much based on the reverse). Acetone probably can't do anything for that. And of course dipping will put the coin in the DETAILS category.

Toning can be a good thing, if it has eye appeal. Someone post a nice Peace dollar with toning for example.

AU-58. Poor eye appeal with this type of toning. Acetone won't do anything for this one. I agree with Imthealphaomega, try a dip in E-Z-Est and rinse properly and pat dry with soft cloth, don't rub.

I agree with Imthealphaomega and IndianGoldEagle about dipping this coin. Follow IndianGoldEagle's directions on dipping the coin. Don't dip it for too long. If you dip it quickly, that will preserve most of the mint luster.

This is a prime candidate for a dip then put it in a brown paper bag on a window sill for a couple of years.

Technical Grade 55. Eye Appeal 2/10. Yeah. Dip it.

This looks like terminal toning that won't go away with dipping, but it can't hurt. Just don't do the reverse so you don't disturb the luster there.

Might as well try, it's not a big investment.

Thanks everyone. I will give it a dip and post the results.

I try to buy coins only with original surfaces, but then comes the type of tarnish/toning oxidizing pattern. There may be someone out there who will pay you $25 - that is subjective. If you have never dipped a coin (I never have), read all of the above recommendations before doing so. Plus there is the cost of the dip. If it's your idea of having fun - go for it - cheap entertainment

That type of toning is etched (at least slightly) on to the surface. Any attempt to improve this coin, will make it worse. If you truly want this coin graded, you might consider one of the TPG's. Have seen a LOT worse toning straight graded.

Looks like a common date AU Peace dollar with fairly unattractive toning. Not worth the grading fees, and although I'm a proponent of originality this particular coins most likely future is to be melted for silver value. A good candidate for experimentation.

For the grade, I would think AU-58.
