MS65+ and just a beautiful example of a Morgan. Very Nice!

My friend, that is one beautiful 1898!

My very first reaction was "MS-66, all day long." If PCGS wanted to nitpick it to death, they could come in at MS-65+, but the fields are fantastic. I'm at 66 here, and could easily see a half point eye appeal bump from there.

MS66 a 65+ wouldn't surprise me either. Very nice Morgan.

i was shocked with the result of this one and not very happy with the grade. I wasn't expecting anything less than 65 and a decent shot at 66.

Beautiful coin, and surprising result. Perhaps the luster wasn't strong enough for a 66, but I would have thought an easy 65.

Wow, was on the 65 shot at a 66 train as well. Looks like someone was ready to start their Covid staycation early at PCGS

Jeesh. That's just wrong. Every submission is a crapshoot, for sure, but that's just wrong.

Seriously ridiculous. That's a big swing and a miss by PCGS. Show that coin around any bourse floor and see the reactions.

The original pics show a washed out, shiny silver surface. No swirling, cartwheel luster is evident. Pretty much mark free, but I think it;s been dipped. UNC details

look at the original photos. the coin has nice cartwheel all around both sides. the grade was shot through the holder and I had to hold it at an angle to avoid the light. no sign of dipping on this one

since its a common coin is it worth a breakout and resub to PCGS or maybe ANACS. it already cost $42 to get it to PCGS and back with shipping. it would have to pull a 66 to be worth it. the biggest concern I have of coming up short is the chin area and in the field to the left of the eagle wing that would hold it to 65

@panzaldi, Don't be in a hurry to spring it out of 64 jail. When we have shows again (someday, far, far away . . .), cover the grade with electrical tape and walk it around a bourse floor. If you still get a consensus at 66, it's worth the jailbreak to take another run at it, preferably with another TPG.

Common date or not, that's an uncommon eye appeal Morgan. It jumps out from the ordinary. Like many on here, I've seen many thousands of Morgans over the years, and this one caught my eye immediately. I suspect many people will have the same reaction.

I looked again at the chin and field to the left of the eagle's right wing (our visual left). I just don't see those areas at 65. I truly think this is a 66 Morgan.

Seriously under-graded. Somebody must have been having a bad morning or something when they gave it that grade!
