Since your 1982-D is pretty beat up, you can drop it on a hard surface, such as a wooden table or a countertop. You'll hear a difference between a coppery ring vs. the dull "thud" of a zinc cent. Test a few "spenders" for which you already know the composition. I don't recommend doing that for a "keeper," though, as you could badly ding up the coin.

@LadyArizona.... An inexpensive food scale that weighs in grams, can be purchased at most major retailers.

Try this site to make a home made scale to find out which you have.

Some of the text in the page is covered, but you can copy it and paste it on notepad to read it to make a tongue depressor scale.

I highly doubt it's copper, but that would be quite a find. Weight will be needed to confirm.

Looks like the plating is worn off on the left planter, which means its a zinc coin. (See the gray on the center of the planter)

with John1. It's only a matter of time before zinc rot sits in.

As you can see, you got us all interested! A 1982-D small date, copper (bronze) cent would be a real find. I'd keep this one though
