Not a fake, just been damaged, possibly acid etched.

There is absolutely no reason anyone would make a fake 1957 D Lincoln Wheat cent. It's real and worth a few cents.

With the partial reverse photo now posted, I'm thinking acid exposure.

Your coin just lost considerable mass being dissolved, regardless of how it happened. Think about how glass (or a coin) can be worn and smoothed by the sea.

The weight and size have been reduced by an acid dissolving the material of the coin itself. There is a 99% chance it was a completely normal coin to begin with.

i was wondering about the rim, it does not show any signs damage, it's round and smooth with a sharp edge. I read about
the U.S. mint would make foreign coins and thought maybe its one of those. and it's about the same size and weight to a 50 centimes franc made around that time....

It is an acid coin. But I wonder about all that stuff too! But you know, you can research all that stuff yourself and find all the answers and then ask this forum if you are correct. If you don't like the answer, you can continue the research, like I do, and then present them with more evidence. Nothing is concrete and there are loads of gaps out there to be filled! Lets start filling with our next coin!
