Looks like this ebay seller thinks that they are on to something here. Have a look at their other item that is up for auction ... no mucking around with this time with a Starting Bid of only $14,500.00!

Must have got a punch set for his/her birthday!

Yes I would say this just some fake bidding but this aleast not fake coinage. Note there are people wanting a few coins maybe to complete their PMD set, personally not buying but technical a law against this but that more to stop industrial melting of coins.

Surely a 7 would fetch a higher price than a 6.

This topic came up a while ago. I don't think the seller is marking the coins. It was apparently commonly done by vending and gaming machine technicians so they could identify how many coins were inserted during the testing of the machine. Repairs were often done during operating hours with coins already in the cash hopper from customers.

Not accusing the seller of marking them. Just can't believe anyone would pay more than 99 cents for one of these "rare" coins. As you say common practice for them to be marked, and common to find in circulation.

Bidding is currently at $23.50. Hurry, only an hour to go!!

Me either when I wrote, "Must have got a punch set for his/her birthday!" ... just being sarcastic because why would anyone think that something that anyone could easily do at any time to any coin make it valuable!

Seems the going price for that 1996 dollar coin with Henry Parkes "wearing" glasses I posted above is $45,000.

At least according to this listing:
