I assume that scratch by the date is on the holder? I will say MS-66 but just a guess. Super cool coin and a pretty low mintage too.

looks at least MS66 maybe a + on that one. the thing I look for on these is fully struck columns and you see that on this one  |

Great coin. High MS grade for sure. They sell a restorer for the scratched plastic lenses. That is why I like to keep my slabbed treasures in small plastic zip locks.

People did a really good job of preserving 3-cent nickels, with large surviving populations of gem proofs and business strikes for most years. The 1889 is no exception. This one looks like a business strike and should grade MS-66 or better. It's very choice!
The mark by the date appears raised; could it be a die crack or gouge, rather than a scratch on the holder?

I have no argument against MS66. I prefer coins from this series in GEM condition to be EDS without a clash event. Beautiful example and crummy holder. This could be a perfect candidate for a re-holder or even reconsideration if under-graded.

Well I was convinced that I had gone insane by putting $1300 bid on this coin, and equally no one else would be that stupid, and I would have to apologize to my wife for overspending on it.
I was wrong. It just auctioned for more than $1500 -- a huge premium over the NGC/PCGS retail value
So, alas, I own it not.

Softness on the obverse for this date is typical. Great strike, EDS, great luster! I'm at MS66 and a great candidate for CAC if it doesn't already have a green bean.

I miscalculated, and do not own this coin  . Although the published value is something like $800, it sold for closer to $1500. I'd bid $1150, which I expected would easily win.  Edited by pristine2

The CAC gold sticker drives the price up. The gold sticker coins typically start at the next grade up.

My first thoughts before I saw the grade was MS65+ to MS66+ so it's in line with my thoughts on the coin the price it sold for though? That was over the 66+ PCGS market price, which is usually over priced to begin with, so I don't know, someone or two really wanted this coin, to bid it up that high. I think it's a $1150-1300 coin at best.
All that aside it's super clean, blast white and with very original surfaces, as well as a Gold bean from CAC. That I'm sure, is one reason the price went high as it did. It's also an older holder so the new owner is probably thinking of an upgrade if they are a dealer, I'd just put it away for a decade or two if possible, probably a good investment coin.
It's one of the nicest I've seen in the later dates in a long time.
