Non collectors call them Pennies. The mint calls them cents. The U.S. Mint never made pennies for their coinage. Just cents.   UK made Pennies. 23Edited by coop

My response was intended to clarify that it's not a cent based on the wording on the reverse as that's the value of the coin, not it's name. Rather, it's a cent because that's what the US Mint and the US Treasury have decided to call it. |

I thought the penny/cent debate was put to rest here some time ago, yet it continues to raise its ugly head again and again.
Is it just a way to make someone that says "penny" appear to be ignorant and uneducated?
Such a petty thing to always "correct". Who really cares anyway? Everyone knows what coin is being addressed regardless. Just get over it already and let it go.
Maybe those always pointing out the distinction between the two should start a campaign to correct the misnomer on all the rolls and boxes and such that are erroneously labeled as it seems to cause some confusion amongst the uneducated.

Such a silly subject. Nothing wrong with either word, which are both common in our language. Take a penny, leave a penny. A penny for your thoughts. A penny saved is a penny earned. Pennies from Heaven. And on.  |

well gosh golly sorry for the miss identification on the dryer cent. "dryer penny" is a term passed around a bit in appliance repair in my area, for a coin that gets stuck in a dryer and deformed in some way. If this CENT is one of those its probably the neatest one I've seen, is the reason why I was asking. I appreciate the education but can do without all bickering. Just trying to learn some about these coins for my mother in law. Father in law past away few years back found his desk full of coins when the basement flooded. not expecting to find a fortune but maybe a couple worth a buck or two and some with some history and a story.
