The elusive 'serpent nickel'... Cool find. Possibly (possibly...) took a circulation hit--not a sharp hit--which flared metal outwards. Light circulation flattening followed. In any event, a fun curiosity.

My first, did I just break the internet or just this piece of the forum? Thanks, Doug.

If that were the case, then there should be more of these.

What about a lamination problem? War Nickels are known for those. I see something disturbing the adjacent U, and there is a squiggly crack or seam running away from the S to the southwest. There also appears to be a chunk missing from the reverse above FIVE, although that might be a dent of some kind.
