@dee, first welcome to CCF. Second, I see that the edge on this nickel isn't square and perpendicular to the faces, as they typically are. You might have a coin which was struck partly out of the collar, which would be a pretty neat find. I'm interested to see what others think you've got there.

Thank you jbuck! I am definately new to all of this! My father always loved to collect coins. I guess that has fallen to me now.

Yes Spence, The edge is definately off. It starts at the bottom and as it progresses around the edge it gets continuously disfigured with a distinctive rim. The top edge along the face is sharp also

Definitely looks like a partial collar strike. Don't quit your day job. Worth a few bucks. Nice keeper.
But some 2x2 coin holders at Hobby lobby to protect it.

Also you should not hold the coins by the surface like that. Hold it by the edge so you don't ruin it with fingerprints

Very cool find! This is out of my comfort zone, still learning many of the "errors" but it also put me in mind of a less dramatic, than shown on Error Ref, "Cupped Off Center Strike", I would say Spence is correct though. LINK https://www.error-ref.com/cupped-of...nter-strike/  -makecents-

Terminology question: I thought a railroad rim specifically refers to a collar clash on a reeded coin, which leaves a cross-hatched line along the rim reminiscent of a train track symbol on a map. Are collar clashes on smooth edge coins also called railroad rims?
As many have already said, this coin is a nice example of a partial collar strike. Your dad left you a neat error coin. =)
