Yes, appears to be an acid issue. Suggest not holding coins with metal clamps/tools.

It made me cringe when I saw holding that coin with metal object.

Quote: isn't it also possible that it's a 1970-D quarter struck on dime stock? Good point. If that were the case, the planchet would be the thickness of a dime and not a quarter. This one looks to me like it's the thickness of a quarter, but the OP certainly can test it with a gauge or do a side-by-side comparison.

The concave edge indicates acid damage - the inner copper layer was eaten away more than the outer cladding.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Hondo, that would make sense to me.
The thickness should be compared to a quarter and a dime anyway, just in case.

Agree, the copper layer has been dissolved at a slightly higher rate than the clad layer. Points to acid erosion.

please don't hold any coins with finger/toe nail cutters - you will only damage a coin that way.

Words of encouragement are one of the major food groups. We need to consume them regularly to thrive and grow.
