If the Seller thought for one second that the coin would straight grade it would have been slabbed before it was listed. Seller noted in their ebay listing that the coin "may nave been cleaned at one time" so that gets them off the hook for non disclosure if somebody had asked. Yeah, it may be "In God We Trust" in this old world but at least you did your homework and asked for opinions and several of us thought it was possibly cleaned. I've had my share of problem coins over the past 50+ years and I wouldn't have been ashamed to own this one. It is what it is.

(By the way it's BIN price on ebay was 2295$. Not bad, all things considered.)

I think it is a VF-30, very pleasant for the issue.
Suffering from bust half fever.

Westcoon, I had actually contacted the seller through their web site and they agreed to sell for $2,075 direct but I was too slow to react. I would have been good to go since I prefer raw coins. Thankfully there are always more coins to go find!

Thanks all for the feedback!

It may, depending on when it was cleaned. Many old coins being cleaned was an acceptable (although not harshly or "polished" examples) practice many moons ago. (Don't ask me how many moons though - I don't know! )

That is a tough coin. VF obverse and EF reverse. Definitely cleaned at one time, and it's hard to say if it's market acceptable at this point without examining it in person. Based on photos alone, I'd say a net VF-30 Details, Cleaned. But personally I wouldn't buy a coin like that raw.

For what it may be worth, both Seated dollars in my 7070 have been cleaned, probably a long time ago. Regardless, it does not bother me at all, especially when I paid "details" money to fill those two holes and there are worse looking "straight" coins in the album.

As Paul Harvey use to say "and now for the rest of the story."

Turns out this coin made its way into a CACG VG Details holder. I thought this was VF20, VG is ridiculous, IMO.

I think I saw this sold listing when I was interested in the coin but dismissed it seeing that it was graded VG and it had a greenish color to the coin.

When I looked at it again, I looked at the reverse and it was a clear match with the rim ding just after 4 o'clock. The first seller pics of the obverse obscured several obvious makers like the rim ding at 8 o'clock.

As noted by Westcoin, the second seller mentioned possible old cleaning.

Three resellers vied for this coin at the first auction. For posterity, here are some pics including CACGs. Also CACG price guide for this details coin was $2,200.

I still would not be opposed to owning this coin.

Who would really care about a miniscule cleaning to get it at $2200? It may easily very well be worth north of $5000

VG is a joke. That Reverse is XF and even if netted on the Obverse, no way.

I swing a metal detector and have a knack for finding dirty old coins.

from what I've seen CACG is a little bit tougher when grading. no way this coin is VG. it doesn't matter which TPG grades this coin its VF all day long. I thought it would pass. if the coin was net graded by CACG in a straight VG10 holder instead of detailing it, it might make sense. its always a role of the dice regardless

Same logic applied to my Seated dollars, although they are in a much lower price bracket.

It has to have a full LIBERTY for CAC to give it VF, they are very tough with that. Very surprised it fell to VG though, that is harsh.

I agree with the upthread discussions. Technical grade, cleaning, net grade, CAC nonsense, and other observations aside, it's not like there is an abundance of Carson City Seated dollars anywhere. The 1870-CC is the "common" CC date, but it is in demand in any grade. This coin is absolutely collectable and would be an easy sale on any bourse floor.

Oh, I'm kicking myself for not jumping on it when I had the chance, FC. The common CC with ~11k minted.

I was close to buying a couple of GSA CC Morgan's when I thought to myself, everyone has these, millions of them, so I dumped that search and this one was the first one that came up.

For certain, I know that feeling all too well. "The one that got away" will eat us alive if we let it. The only way any of us can move is forward, so look ahead to the next coin you will have an opportunity to buy. With very few exceptions, there will always be another coin of the same date and mint that will show up somewhere sometime, and it may turn out to be a better coin. Sometimes that next coin is a different date or a better eye appeal coin or more affordable or part of a package deal that makes the opportunity even better. Hang in there.
