I don't mean to rain on this parade, but....
You guys have to keep in mind that our hobby also attracts people whose morals are compromised, and their wish is to separate you from your coins and money. These miscreants will establish a membership, post a bunch to qualify and head straight to the trading forum to start sucking people in. They do a few decent trades, escalate their activities and then stab a bunch of you in the back all at once and run away.
The pattern has repeated itself uncountable times, across all types of online communities. Part of my job here is to ensure that it doesn't happen at Coin Community. As a result, anyone who joins the Forum and immediately starts talking about making deals raises an immediate red flag.
The percentage of trolls is extremely small. It's almost certain that none who read these words have any but the most honest motives. All the same, we can't afford to make these assumptions, and we're not going to.

Thank you Super Dave for your response. Obviously, I got really excited when first reading through this site as I imagine most people do. Practically read everything I could for a week before I signed myself up! Now I'm doing the classic thing you are talking about. Posting as fast as I can! I can see now how this raises the red flag to the veterans here. Nevertheless, I want to be a part of the community for a long time and only time will prove that.
What is you advice to the newbies here as to how we can best avoid bad sellers, traders, and buyers. Is there a list? Can we block people? Is there protection of any kind? Your experience would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome!
I think the best thing is to keep the dollar amounts small until you get to know everyone a little better.
For me, the more posts someone has, the more comfortable I am with a transaction with them. I've had nothing but positive experiences here.

Your experience would be greatly appreciated. Unfortunately, there is no guaranteed protection. Caveat emptor. The "50 post and 14 Day" rule helps you as much as it helps us. By letting us get to know you, you also get to know us. You will find that some real friendships are forged here (Hey Eaglefoot!). Trust builds with time and conversation. After a few hundred posts and several months (or years) in the Community, B/S/T's with certain members may feel no different than buying a used item from your longtime neighbour. Getting to know members gives you the added bonus of their valued opinion when it comes to B/S/T's with members you might not "know" as well. Members will watch your back and warn you about potential problems. They most certainly have no problem letting the Community know when there is a wolf among us. |

...meant to add - and agree with jbuck - in the meantime, spend some time talking about coins and getting to know the great people on this board and the rest will take care of itself.

Hey JB ! We just got internet at home now ! ...  ....  I'm used to havin' it at the office...but I've never had it at home before !.... It's "old hat" to the fian'cee....but pretty neat to me ! Yippee ! |

Hi SuperDave. Feel free to red flag me... if you are looking at what I post then maybe you can catch me falling into one of those people's traps and warn me out of it, lol. I do not have anything to sell. I will be looking to buy. I could use a big brother eye looking out for me :)

Thanks for the welcome, Once I get a better camera I'm really interested in having a few odd balls identified mostly. Every coin I've looked at on the ID topic you all have found out what it is  |
