I have a rare decimal coinage wallet presented by the RBA in 1966 for my participation in Operation Fastbuck, the delivery of decimal coinage in Australia. There is very little known of this Green wallet as there were only 70 presented & to my knowledge there has only been one wallet sighted & that was in the late 1980s.
The wallet at that time brought $700.00.

As I am not a collector, I would ask the following questions.

1/ Would the RBA have a record of the presentation?.
2/ Is the Wallet known in the coin community?
3/ If I were to consider selling the item, what price should I ask?.
4/ Would ebay be the best way to go?.

Than you in anticipation......Charlie

Hi Charlie,

1. No idea, but I wouldnt be surprised if they did.
2. 'fastbuck' is very well known in the aussie coin community. It is mentioned in McDonalds Australian Coin and Banknote catalogue and has had several magazine articles written about it.
3. Who knows, they appear so infrequently at auction that yours could 'set' the market price. Current catalogue value is $900. However, I'd take this with a pinch of salt, catalogue values are not reliable for rare items like yours. For example, if you wanted $1000-$1500 for it I'd pay you that right now, and I am by no means an advanced collector. I am sure there are others out there who could easily outbid me so you are most likely to get more than that for it.
4. If you are not experienced on ebay then absolutely not. If you are then ebay could be ok. The other option is consigning it to an Australian auction house like Downies.

Mark

Hello Mark.... Thank you for your answer to my posting. I listed the wallet on ebay about 12 months ago on the advice of a collector. I put a starting price of $1700 on the item with a 10 day listing, with proviso that I would remove the listing if there was no bid prior to the 12 hour ebay deadline for removing the listing without penalty.
Needless to say there had not been a starting price bid at that deadline & I removed the item from sale...At that time there were 47 watchers, but I did not want to create a possible bidding frenzy at the last minute which could have seen prospective buyers miss out.
The link by "docsfishn" in his posting rediscovered an article that I wrote in response to a query asking for details of the operation. For your information the wallet is in original condition with all original coins intact.
If you are in Melbourne you would be welcome to inspect the wallet by arrangement... Thank you all for your interest...Charlie

G'day Charlie,
would love to hear about your participation in this event.

I would try a couple of dealers in Melbourne first, get an idea of price for it, would probably start with Downies.
Then as Mark said consign it to an auction house, maybe.
ebay would be my last resort.

Charlie,

The bidding frenzy in the last minute is unfortunately what ebay is all about. Big ticket items like yours are likely to see lots of 'snipes'. I'd love to look at it but I am in Adelaide. I'd also love to buy it but I'd rather see you get what it is worth before me getting a bargain. Take it to an auction house like downies (they have an auction coming up this year) and get their estimate on it. Remember to factor in the buyers premium that you dont get.

If you dont like the estimate they make then by all means come back to me and we can see what can be worked out :D.

Hello again Guys.
Well I've done it!!!! The Fastbuck wallet is on ebay as of 2330 tonight.
Am asking a ridiculous price. It will be interesting to see what, if anything, happens. I'll keep you informed of the number of "watchers"

Good luck with your sale Charlie. I can't imagine that there are too many of the original 70 around.

Look forward to seeing how this auction turns out.

I dont know why Charlie wasnt advised against pulling it before the 12 hour deadline if it was going to start at a high price. It may have sold towards the end at what I'm guessing was the minimum price acceptable.

I didn't tell him explicitly but I made it rather clear above:

Hi guys.... Well, it was an interesting excercise. Surprised me a bit that there were only 17 watchers. I nearly took the offer of the guy who generously emailed me with a bid of $4.50. Had some interesting Email & phone calls from people who know collecting.
I will be quite happy to hold onto the wallet until a later date.
I did ask one of the guys if there was anywhere where it could be displayed, but apparently the only Australian coin museum is in Sth.Australia, who apparently have one of the wallets.
I am going over there next week for a short holiday & I will try to have a look at it. I may recognize the name of the recipient.
Thank you all again for your interest....Regards .... Charlie
