@Rustoleum Here's a Customs ruling; Quote: In accordance with HQ 079348, dated December 29, 1986, "The only legitimate allowance available under 5(b) is for coins issued by governments for use as legal tender, that are imported for monetary use, that is not for resale, collecting, or for their precious metal content, and that are currently used as money." Therefore, having been designated as legal tender does not mean automatic recognition as an intangible of General Headingnote 5(b)(TSUS).

Sigh.... After 45 years of buying coins from Canadian dealers and collectors, it seems it could be in jeopardy. I hope something gets sorted soon.

Maybe a ray of sunshine exists. The court still needs to rule whether the tariffs are legal. Don't hold your breath.

The average de minimis shipment was about $48 in 2024, according to CBP data. Sort of petty one would think! Enjoy , America!

@DBM Thanks for the info, as disappointing as it is.
@Pacificoin Looks like you were right. Every way I tried to formulate the question on google it gave me the indication that currency crossing the border was duty free. If not, then the Zonos app is gonna mess a lot of people up.
Let's hope this bad nightmare ends.

May be starting .tariffs ruled illegal by Appeals court this afternoon, but will stay in place for now . 7-4 ruling he over stepped his bounds . Has to OCTOBER 14 to appeal . The 7-4 decision upholds a ruling in May by the U.S. Court of International Trade, which found Trump's use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose tariffs by declaring national emergencies was unlawful and violated the U.S. Constitution, which affords tariffing and tax powers to the U.S. Congress.

Hey gang, I've stopped buying Canadian coinage for my collecting almost two years ago now. I used to buy most of my goodies from the Royal Canadian Mint ( RCM). Does the RCM have to deal with these new charges too? I used to get free shipping due to the yearly quantities; is that option gone also?

I just went to the RCM site and added a coin to my cart. When I viewed it, the following message was on the page: Quote: In accordance with the Terms of Sale, the purchaser or, as applicable, the importer (the person receiving the goods in the destination country if not the purchaser) is responsible for the payment of any applicable tariffs.

Under CUSMA the RCM shipments should be duty / tariff free. Our third party shipper is able to get Canada , USA and Mexico coins across , no issues so far . They just have to described completely to US HS codes and the proper manufacturer address must be in the US customs data base . That said the damage is already completely done, sales to the USA are almost non existent!

It is the uncertainty, Jack. No matter what the actual "rules" are, will U. S. Customs charge a tariff, or will they not? Nobody knows because it is a crap shoot. I have not ordered a coin from Canada since before April, nor will I until things settle out.

True that Rob! That is why I chose the word SHOULD! Hopefully all of this gets a reasonable solution in the end . Somehow I am doubtful it will ever go back to the way it was or even a reasonable facsimile. Tariffs and Duties are a barrier to fair and free trade . It is always better to trade goods rather than bullets! The parallels of the 1930s to current day are uncanny!

In theory, if U. S. Customs makes a bad call and charges a tariff on a coin that they should not, you can appeal their decision. In practice, your carrier (Fedex, UPS, DHL) makes the appeal for you, charges you $90 USD for their services, and blows your de minimus purchase out of the water. A great system!
