ebay sent out a notice today indicating that the de minimis exemption on tariffs for goods going into the US is now gone. So from now on all packages going to the US will need to clear customs with full documentation for duty collection even if it is a low value item. ebay has stopped selling discounted Canada Post Tracked Packet service into the US (which was a great option!) because it is not compliant with the new rules. I think I am going to stop shipping to the US unless an item goes in a regular envelope or is expensive enough to deal with the hassles of the paperwork. Plus the costs for buyers just went through the roof because they will have to pay duties plus the fee to the shipper for collecting duties. I predict a huge drop in sales of Canadian coins to US residents other than through sites like Heritage and Great Collections.

Let's put things in perspective. First , the de minimis is still in effect until August 29th . This could change on a moments notice depending upon TACO s mood swings . ebay stopped the labels because of the uncertainty of the situation of CPC being in compliance with US customs. Second , 85 per cent of North American articles are EXEMPT of duties and tariffs due to the CUSMA agreement. This includes collectors coins under section 9705.00.00.60 that are marked country of origin USA , CANADA , MEXICO or any of the territories that are now thereof . Third as of noon today AUG 22 we have heard nothing from our third party shipper as to the new requirement. I am going to bet this will become crystal clear sometime next week . Back in the 1980s when there was a very small de minimis ,We were able to sell coins in the USA, heck we even set up at US shows. Sit tight this is far from settled!

I sent a package from USA to Canada today. Was not aware of the change(s). Today's postage cost was $26US compared to $17.85 for last week (same value, weight, size, etc.) Plus was told that the recipient would have to pay an extra $15 duty. Since I sell mostly Canadian coins and tokens, I am expecting my ebay sales (about half go to Canada) to wither.

I hope that Canada and the USA will sign a 0% for 0% trade agreement. How difficult can it be...

Sorry Giants , that has zero to do with Tariffs. When you send a package to Canada from the USA the Canadian recipient pays 0 per cent duties on Coins . Coins ( numismatic ) fall under section 9705 of the Customs act . Coins are also dealt with in the free trade (CUSMA) agreement along with 85 per cent of everything else . Depending on the PROVINCE or Territory the package is addressed to will attract anywhere from 5 per cent GST to 15 per cent HST . @numised. Yup no tariffs on any North American Trade we would all be way better for it . Better yet maybe the political geniuses could come up with a complete Customs Union . But that would be far too intelligent! There is a huge difference between Tariffs or National Sales Taxes .

For now, I am halting all of my ebay coin sales to the US. If this does come to fruition after August 29, it could also potentially impact the CCF Christmas Santa exchange.

Downloaded the Zonos app today that automatically calculates duties owed when shipping to the US.
I entered 'coin' as the description, entered the sold value, stated the country of origin as Canada, and it calculated the duties to be paid as $0.00!
Although there was a $3.99 processing fee...

@ Johnnysprawl .. Must have downloaded a very bad version of Zonos! You are so far wrong it is unbelievable! Two things I just took a picture of an ICCS 64 1967 Dollar and here is what ZONOS returned with as results.. Canada HS code 7118.10.0000 value for duty $70.00 USD General rate 0.00 Special rate 35% August 1 reciprocal rate duty !! Total duty $24.50 .USD We were at US customs Commercial section today for over an hour , with an officer we have known for over a decade . He told us that under Trumps Emergency Executive order that the 35 per cent Rate is indeed applied to Canada coins as well as the rest of the world at their respective rates ( Mexico for instance 25 %). Coins are NOT specifically exempt under CUSMA ! He showed us in detail Section 98 and 99 allowing these exorbitant rates! The only numismatic coins that can be shipped into the USA from Canada duty free as of Friday August 29th are Coins of the United States of America and then ONLY with extensive paper work and documentation. Unless there are drastic changes selling coins into the USA is O V E R.

PacificCoin, I actually think you are wrong. But I understand why. I played around with the zonos app, putting in sample coin descriptions, and noticed that the using slightly different words generated very different results. It is an AI program, so not perfect in properly interpreting descriptions.
For instance, if I put '20 Canadian Coins' it have me a 35% duty charge with the HS code 7118.10.000. But if I put in '20 Canadian Coin' it give no duty with an HS code of 7118.90.0055, which is the proper code for coins that are legal tender. Weird.
As I played around with it more I noticed that if I added the words 'legal tender' to any coin description it would give me no duty, only the $3.99 processing fee.
There is no duty on coins of legal tender that cross into the US, as long as the value is under $10,000, so I think as coin sellers we are good. We may one of the very few types of sellers that won't be crippled by this.

The problem is for now all is chaos. It is not worth the trouble of having shipments go astray or get returned. I think the best approach is to do nothing until this all gets figured out and all rules are clear. No sales for me until October at least.
