We are reviewing in math class so we started going over some formulas, one which was for increase and decrease and she asked us to name something that increases in value. One kid says interest, and of course I had to say coins She told me I was wrong. I told her "How am I wrong if a $20 Gold Double Eagle that weighs just less than an ounce of gold, and its face value was $20, how come one can sell for over $1600?" She said that was for metal value. I then said "OK for another example, a 1909S VBD Lincoln Cent was worth just one measly cent in 1909 correct? Than explain to me how one can go for over $600?" Needless to say that got her to be quiet. Then someone in the class asked about the copper cents. She said that it was a sham that people use for publicity. Once again I corrected her. I said if it was a sham, how did I get someone on ebay to pay me $176 for $100 worth of copper cents? She called me a liar. By now, I was really hot, after being called dumb and being told that I'm wrong when I know more about coins than anyone in my school. I pulled out my phone and showed her my ebay records and you should have seen her eyes light up! But that's not the funny part, after school when I made a bank run, I saw her buying some rolls of cents and just had to confront her about it. "Taking my idea, huh?" Just thought I show you how our knowledge can come in handy and we can get a good laugh! Edited by yankee1227 12/13/2011 6:28 pm

That's awesome! ... sadly yankee1227, it has been my experience that making your boss and/or your teacher look bad only feels good for a brief moment ... and then they have all the time in the world to getcha back! However => on the bright-side => if and when she decides to lower-the-boom and getcha back, you can always go to your happy-place and remember her buying those rolls of pennies! (oh, and the best part is => she probably has a total winner tucked-away in one of her rolls that you could snipe from her with ease) ... "Ummm, excuse me, Miss Wobblebottom, I'll trade ya three of these new shiny pennies for that dirty old penny with the old Queen on the back of it" "Sure yankee1227 ... maybe I was wrong about you? ... maybe I can actually teach you a thing or two, eh?" "yah, thanks Wobblebottom ... just gimme the penny, we're done here"

When I get in my "coin mode" it's all about business! I'll have to ask her what she found...I didn't tell her which were copper and which weren't

Yankee, you bring up an interesting subject. I find that people who do not have any interest in coins REALLY do not believe that they have numismatic value or even melt value above face value. Or maybe they do but they think it is a pittance that would not be worth their time.
I don't bother to mention collecting to most people because their eyes glaze over and then they say something dismissive as if to put coin collecting in the same category as Beanie Babies.

He who laughs last, laughs best. Not that your teacher would hold a grudge but making a teacher look like an idiot in front of an entire class may make you feel good for a moment, but I would wonder about a final grade from that person. Myself, at one time being a teacher, I would wonder just how that could effect grading a person. I know I surely would have remembered that incident at grading time. Hopefully yours doesn't. Good Luck.

Exactly. Some people if they took the time to learn, might be quite interested in the subject. My social studies teacher and I last year used to talk coins. I got him interested by giving him a steel Wheat cent because he like WWII. I wish some people would learn that this can be fun but that there is also money to be made. I make my money buy buying and selling coins. I prove this to them by showing them my Swiss watch. But anyway, I was trying to start a coin club at school but only like 3 kids showed up. All well. I got you guys to talk coins with PS If you don't wanna call me Yankee, you can call me Billy

I wasn't trying to make her look dumb, just trying to inform her. While I can see where you are coming from, I highly doubt that my final grade will be affected by this little scenario. I bet there will be a time where she does it to me, so I'll be prepared.

That's how I got flunked out in history in high school. I questioned why people wouldn't accept paper money in the 19th century because it wasn't backed with gold, but today they are perfectly happy to take paper with no backing at all. Teacher insisted (in front of the class) that I didn't know what I was talking about, and that our paper money WAS backed with gold and he should know because he had been an economics major in college. So the next day I brought in my references and pointed out (in front of the class) the laws that had stripped the last of the fractional gold backing from the dollar. He was mad. I did the rest of my work that semester and did well on my tests but I still flunked the class.

Wow Conder, a teacher can get away with that? It wouldn't surprise me if she trys because she is the rudest and meanest teacher in the school. She can't fail me though, (at least I don't think) because currently I have a 100% in math. I like it and think that someday it might be useful. ( I kinda want to get into economics or journalism)

Quote: I wasn't trying to make her look dumb, just trying to inform her. It wasn't really all that long ago that I was in high school and before that, middle school. I was the same way as you. It's not until much later in my 20's where I am now that I realized that I was indeed trying to make the teacher look dumb. I also realized that it probably wasn't really a very nice thing to do. The way you described doing it and the way it made you feel reminded me so much of myself and I regret it now. Consider that all teachers are actually under quite a bit of pressure and that they are also doing one of the more noble jobs in the country. I have no doubt that you know more about coins than your teacher, but she probably does know more about plenty of other things than you. How would you feel if you were in front of a bunch of people and she tried to make you look dumb. Besides, answering "coins" to the question of what increases in value is not really the best answer anyway. The act of increasing in value is not necessarily inherent to a coin. Providing specific dated examples was just showing off.. Like I said, I was the same way, but I see now that it didn't make the teachers (or even other students) respect me more....it made them respect me less.

yankee1227 - this from a former teacher... if you now go to her and (as you said here) tell her you did not mean to have an attitude or anything; ask her how she is doing looking through the pennies; explain to her that you are a collector connected to many other collectors worldwide (some experts); and offer to give her any specifics she may want on how you made the money on the ebay sales you might find a new friend. This is always a good thing for a student/teacher relationship. If you do it right, there might not be a problem with the grading situation either. Thankfully I always had good relationships with my students. I would not sacrifice their education for a good relationship - this is robbing them - but living close to the school and many students, we never knew who was going to show up for supper. We literally had a different student (or two) show up 4-5 nights a week!

I think I will ask her if she needs help. Like you said, it never hurts to have a new friend!
