TJsCoins Pillar of the Community United States 3229 Posts	Posted 02/18/2012 11:07 am Here is my new Aurelian, Tetradrachm. When I saw this piece I was impressed and I am very happy with the coin! It looks even better in hand; a nice deep strike! It weighs 8.61 grams and measures 22.5 mm. I do have a question though! The shop owner has the coin as - Obv: Aurelian, Billon Tetradachm, "AKL DOM AVPHLIANOC CEB"; Rev: "ETOYC", Sears Millenium Edition: 11677 On Wildwinds I find a very similar coin as: Aurelian Potin Tetradrachm of Alexandria. Year 6 = 275-276 AD. A K L DOM AVPHLIANOC CEB, laureate cuirassed bust right / ETOYC S, eagle standing right, wreath in its beak, palm behind far wing. http://wildwinds.com/coins/ric/aurelian/t.html I think that a billon coin is bronze with a little silver mixed in (sometimes with surface a wash), and "potin" is bronze with a little lead mixed in. Regarding billon or potin, I've read these coins described interchangeably; I wouldn't know how to tell. I've read potin described as bronze with higher tin content, sometimes lead and antimony. ancientcoinguy Pillar of the Community United States 842 Posts	Posted 02/18/2012 5:26 pm Seems to me that whenever I see a coin described as being potin it is from Alexandria, Egypt. This metal composition must have been the favorite in that area to use for coinage. This is just a guess, though. Report this Post to the Staff

I am am eyeing a Claudius II tradrachm with almost as much detail from the same seller. I really like the eagle reverse on these Egyptian tetradrachms. Report this Post to the Staff
