There a few fakes of these coins around, but I don't think this one of them. The genuine ones far outnumber the fakes.

where did you buy it? here's a similiar @ 25.5 g ebay 271000844749 , (real one should be closer to 26.6) yours even has a similiar slighlty off center rim along the bottom of the side with the bust doesn't say replica, doesn't say original - but the seller answered my message within an hour and told me it was in fact a fake. here is his message: Dear a.porter,Dear friends hello! The coin is a replica! However, many people do not distinguish out the authenticity ofOnly experts can identify the authenticity ofI sold these coins Material: copper silver-plated!I hope you will enjoy it! - shops_honesty2012 love his seller name...

I don't see much to make me think it is a fake, other than the surfaces seem a bit funny- not smooth where I would expect it. I see some evidence of raised dots in the ear details, the eye details, and on the details in the wreath- especially the long leaf at upper left, and the bottom left leaves of the wreath. The edge and around the edge details seem good. Check the weight, check for magnetic, check for silver sound. It does seem a bit weak overall. I would really want to see it personally before I could be sure. There are many counterfeits of this issue, and a lot are much worse than this one.

I got mine from ebay. As far as I was told, China fat man dollar counterfeits could be real silver and exactly the same weight and dimension... the best way may be the rim checking...but I have no experience at all.

It looks ok with the edge or the reverse and observe. I have 4 'fat man' coins, they weigh 27.25 to 27.88 grams respectively(VF to XF grades). I use electronic scale to weigh. Yours is a bit heavier, do you think you weigh it right?

Tben, I am terribly sorry, this is typo. My 4 coins range from 26.75 to 26.88.

Quote: Tben, I am terribly sorry, this is typo. My 4 coins range from 26.75 to 26.88 that's where you want to be as far as them faking with real silver... the effort wouldn't reflect the return (silver plated maybe), they would make more just selling the silver bullion

I would never touch this type of coin raw.....I would buy it slabbed by ngc or pcgs

ngc or pcgs are safer/better for investment, but the slabs prevent me from playing the coin... I like the feeling of touching them, and the challenge of knowledge, and also like to save some budget to buy more genuine/fake raw.....

+++ I totally agree, I cannot stand those plastic boxes, coins were made to be used and handled - I really miss handling them and seeing their edges (even with the new boxes) for those I didn't opened... And anyway, China is making fake slabs as well :p

Hi everyone,
I am new here and this forum caught my eye when I was searching for an answer, so I am hoping you guys can help me. I just bought a bunch of coins at a garage sale, a lot of these Fat Man coins. The first thing I did was try a magnet on them, none of them stuck, but when I weighed them they ranged between 18.5 and 20.5g which is less than the official weight. So my question is whether these are worth anything?
