Hey guys,
I've recently gotten some Australian 1981 20c coins and was wondering if any of these are of the 3,5 claw variety?
Also, can someone please tell me which coin is which mint if possible
By the way, I've gotten a new Nikon camera which shoots awesome close up photos :) Great pleasure it is.
Thanks,

You'll probably to zoom in on the platypus' left claw to get a better idea (it's a little hard to tell from these photos).
The 3.5 claw variety was minted in Canada, the regular variety was minted in London and Canberra.

Have a look on this site, there's a picture (not real good, but better than nothing) of the 3½ claw variety.

I find the easiest way to to look at the base of the B in Elizabeth. On the claw coin the base of the B is not flat but rather indented a little.

What you need is one of each type, already identified. Nothing like comparison to a known type to get familiar with variations. Now, I wonder how we could organise that?

I found it very hard, at first, to tell difference between normal claw and tapered claw -3½ claw was much easier to spot. Subtle difference like these are also much harder to see on well worn coins.

Here are some previous discussions about this (with some good photos too);

cheers, Jeff
