GoldenRing89, I agree that there is personal knowledge on what something is worth, and sometimes knowledge doesn't come cheap, but that is NO EXCUSE to rip off someone less knowledgeable to the point that you claimed to do...
I sure hope when the time comes for my grandchildren to sell the coins I'm leaving them, I hope they never run into someone like you..
In fact, I'm saving this link to show my daughters and grandchildren on what happens when you don't know the value of what you have and get taken advantage of...

GoldenRing89, I agree with Broken-Coin.

Yes, knowledge is power, but power corrupts. Abusing one's power to take advantage of another human being's trust is... well, one of the worst things you can do. And doing this to a regular, first-name-basis customer? To top it all off, you come here and gloat about it!

To justify it by saying one "worked hard" to attain this knowledge is simply rationalizing a bad deed.

I abhor crooked business people--they give business a bad name. If it were me, I'd track this guy down, tell him the truth, and give him a fair price for it, and absolve myself. I know I couldn't look myself in the mirror if I had done something like this. But then again, I wouldn't have to in the first place because I don't rip people off.

Find the guy and tell the truth. Do it. It's the right thing to do. You'll feel better.

GoldRing could give the guy a good deal from here on out whenever he brings something in. I'm thinking the drunk/homeless dude probably stole the Kruggerand anyway.

Don't judge me but in my ealry days I bought some Morgans for $600 from a lady that had a medicine bag full of coins she threw in some self wrapped dimes that at the time I didn't check. When I counted them there were 913 silver dimes she threwin for free. This was when silver was $40 per oz making my $600 purchase worth around $4k when all was sold. Needless to say I was happy with my first public buy.

"I'm thinking the drunk/homeless dude probably stole the Kruggerand anyway."

Wow, what a nice bit of completely ignorant rationalization, as well as blaming the victim. Yeah, the guy's a drunk, so he MUST have stolen the coin! Serves him right to get ripped off!

It's quite possible that the guy drinks because his mother is suffering form Alzheimer's and he can't take care of her. Or maybe his wife was murdered. Or his home was foreclosed on and he can't find work. And the coin is a family heirloom and he knows it's worth a lot of money but doesn't know how much. He may have brought it in to see how much he could get in order to alleviate some of the stressors in his life--perhaps to get rental money or maybe medicine. And he ends up getting ripped off by a dealer who comes here and brags about it. Nice.

Not everybody out there who drinks is a bad person, folks. Don't make assumptions about people you don't know.

Although I've posted this coin before it is one of my better deals. It came in a mostly complete folder of quarters that I bought for slightly under melt. I was pretty busy at the time so I did a quick check of what was there, priced the whole folder 10% above melt & put it in my display case at the antique mall. Spot prices dropped so I brought the folder home. A month or two later I pulled it back out & took a closer look. Turns out the 1942 was the double die worth north of $500.....bought & almost resold within a few % of melt. Here's the pics:

Way back in 1962 in Philadelphia I won a St. Gaudens $20 gold eagle at a coin auction for the huge sum of $44. That was back before they changed the gold standard. Think gold was $38 an ounce buy you couldnt own any unless it was a numismatic coin. Sold it a year later for Eagles season tickets at Franklin Field. Couple years later it was worth $800 or more. Those were the good times. Dont ask me how old I am.

Now that's what I call a great deal! Never thought of making a trade like that. Sounds like both parties ended up very happy.

Back then that $44 was probably a close to whole week's pay.

The best deal I ever got was an 1825 silver shilling in nice condition that I got out of a change machine in the late 1980's.

I have a USB microscope on route, that will be one of the first coins I try to take a photograph of.

I have a few good deals. Usually I am too fair though. Paid a guy 20 bucks for a nasty old Peace dollar with a big hole when silver was at 35first an ounce. Hana I ripped my self off. He took the money so fast. Should have offered 5 for it
