I'm guessing nothing can be done. It's real currency and they haven't lied about anything.

RCM did produce smaller sized pure gold penny, an actual sized RCM gold penny may have been about $400

The only thing that I can see that might be wrong is the leaves on the outer box. Could that be a copyright infringement? It looks very much like an image used by the RCM. Otherwise, I think it's a rather clever marketing endeavor, and a cool item.

It's not illegal to gold plate a penny and sell it. It is illegal to pass it off as a real mint product. It would only cost you a dollar and you cold probably sell it for $5 to $10 with no special packaging. The original packaging was done by Monnet Design and this exactly like it, that's a copy right infringement at least. http://www.monnet.ca/?client=royal-...an-mint#1512Even the use of the penny image is illegal. If the really did make 9,999 this is a big deal. edit: A gold plated penny cost to manufacture: 1 cent $1 for plating $2 $3 for the package less than a dollar for the sleeve. A very good looking fake but not worth the asking price. I'm sure if the mint made this it would be around $30. The interesting thing is this is his second version. The original had red packaging and said "Printed in Canada".

for that price I would rather pay 20 bucks extra and get another 1/2 oz silver farewell penny....the case is exactly the same...and that 1/2 oz silver farewell to the penny is one of the nicer coins I have seen in a while...IMO

To be honest I can't believe the mint missed this opertunity I would have bought both a solid gold or a gold plated penny. Huge loss for RCM

I kind of wish the mint had done one of these too. Gold plating a circulation coin does not give a good finish. If they had gold plated a proof coin or a specimen coin the result would have been much nicer. You never know if this fake product sells good the mint may come out with their own version. I'm sure they still have a stock pile of pennies.

Not to have my first post be all argumentative, but this coin would likely violate at least a couple of sections of the criminal code, specifically 456(a), where you cannot deface a coin, or 453(b) where 'a piece of metal or mixed metals that resembles in size, figure, or colour a current coin for which is uttered.' amongst others.
Of course I'm not a lawyer.

Good ol' fashioned copyright infringement will do nicely here. The downside is there are potentially up to 9,999 people who might be interested in coin collecting who are about to be duped out of $50 (at least) ... who wants to bet that every bidder gets a "second chance" offer?

Does someone told the mint about this? I'm sure it's not legal... And if I was a newbie in the domain and buy this I'll surely be frustated to know that it's not an official product of the mint...

I wonder if the person bidding on it realizes it isn't an RCM product. I might venture to guess that once in hand, buyers might become angry once they see it's not official.

Interesting knockoff. I hope the ad is yanked off and criminal/civil charges are filed against this person/company.

Has anyone tried contacting the mint yet and sending them a link to it everyone can complain but if nobody does anything it will stay.

There is nothing wrong to gold-plate a penny and sell them on ebay. Mints in Germany coloured our SML and Wildlife bullions and resell them on ebay as well, and I recall a few of us on this forum express interest in those coins. The only possible wrong doing that I can think of is the resemblance of the box design to the official Mint products. But we don't know if the seller or the manufacturer of these coins have acquire the right to re-use those image either.
