Hey all, I need some more help or advice. I purchased 10lbs of world coins from ebay. Wasn't the best lot I've ever gotten but my daughter and I had a blast sorting the coins this morning. I need to do a couple of things however.

1) most of the coins need some type of cleaning to remove dirt, grease, glue, etc. from circulation. Would soap and water be best or should I use some acetone?

2) I have many more culls then I would have liked. Some are pretty well worn. I've read in the US forums you can raise some details via acid. Any suggestions?

None of the coins are valuable. I collect them for pure enjoyment and to use as teaching aids. So unlike my US collection I'm not going to stress over any damage, etc.

Thanks for any and all advice.

If you must clean them than soap and water is fine, you can also soak the bronze and copper coins in olive oil. I sometimes use a sharpened wood popcycle stick to clean the black crud between the letters. It doesn't scratch the coin.

I agree. If the coins aren't of any value you could use soap and water but olive oil would work better on some of them

If you are unsure of a coin and don't have a Krause book handy feel free to post some pics here and we can look them up and let you know of it's information and guesstomated price.

Just in case

Thanks for the info. I figured I would get a soft toothbrush and use some mild soap/water.

As for the value of the coins I do have a 1901 - present (like 1998) and just ordered a 1801 - 1900 book for the few coins I have pre-1900. Most of the coins I got in the latest lot really need some help. Just sorting the coins resulted in alot of gunk and stuff on the cloth of the table and my hands.

Never tried Olive oil - it best for bronze and copper coins huh?

Please don't use a toothbrush. It will leave scratches on the coin.

If I remember right,in bronze coins aceton gives a better result than water and soap (because of colour changes).Am I right?
