From a US Mint survey I just took: Quote:The U.S. Mint is thinking about introducing a Kennedy half dollar Gold coin in 2014. The coin would be released to mark the 50th anniversary of the original Kennedy half dollar coin. The price of this coin would be approximately $1,200-$1,300. The coin will be minted to demand. Note: Pricing for gold coin products is tied to the market price for one ounce of gold and can vary dependent upon changes in the market value. Note, for context, two other sets would also be offered in 2014 to mark the anniversary. •The first is a set of clad coins, one from each Mint (P, D, S, W), and each will have a different finish. Finishes will be different than what is normally produced at that Mint (that is, the proof finish will not come from San Francisco, and neither the P nor the D coin will be uncirculated). The price will be around $15. •The second set comprises four silver (.9 coinage silver) coins, again one from each Mint with different finishes. The price for this set will be around $100.

Awesome news. The gold set would be out of my range but would definitely buy a couple sets each of the other two.

Yup, took this survey. The gold coin is interesting because they would need Congressional approval to change the metal content.
Would definitely buy the two other sets, maybe all the offerings will be mint to order again?

I would absolutely be interested in the Silver set. Would love to get the gold coin as well but doubt that will be in the budget this year.

The gold coin just doesn't sound like a good idea to me. It seems hokey. I hope they produce the other two sets. I think those are appropriate for the series.

I think if they do a gold coin...make it part of a prestige set where the gold coin is the centerpiece surrounded by the other eight coins. The way I see it...if you are going to belly up to the bar for a $1200 coin, what harm is another $200 to make a complete set out of it?
P.S. the gold coin seems perfectly appropriate as it is a 50th anniversary which is traditionally symbolized by gold

A gold Kennedy would be kind of cool, and who wouldn't want another gold coin in their collection. But it would forever look like one of those hokey gold plated Kennedys that are worth about $5. Stick with what a Kennedy really is , in silver or clad.

Seeing all three sets would be cool, but the gold coin price seems excessive so they might as well scrap that if they really plan on charging that much.

I'd buy the 2014 Kennedy gold piece before I bought a Buffalo - if it is pure gold and not a 14 or 22 carat piece. The Kennedy is pretty certain to be a 1 off special piece. That said - the price range given of $1200 to $1400 doesn't actually have me openning my wallet to fork over cash either.
I also think the $100 price for 4 silver coins is a bit steep. I'll buy them, but won't be happy with an inflated price. It isn't like they are going to have to spend a lot of time designing these things - unless they are throwing a major curve on them.

Gotta agree with Doug58s on this one. The 100 bucks for the set is much more then I thought it should be. That said I will probably still buy it as well.

The gold is definitely a non-starter for me. I am hoping for a single, four silver coin set housed in an attractive package. Something like the Lincoln C&C is preferred, but I would take one like the Five-Star Generals set (with bonus information). I really do not like the idea of two sets (clad and silver) since it means me spending more (I would have to have both sets).

Four .900 halves is 1.44oz or thereabouts, if the proof ASE is still $52.95 at the time of issuance, then the cost of the set would be $80 or so. The gold coin seems like a non-starter because I'm pretty sure Congress would need to approve the change in metallic content. The only way the Mint can get around this is to make a half dollar sized gold medal, and that's not going to sell well for $1,200 a pop.

Haven't we already determined that the Sec. of the Treasury can sign off on any of this stuff any time he/she wants ? As long as the design of coin is the same. ?
