This is one of the few coins I obtained from the Norweb Collection Sale held in October 1987. I placed many bids for that sale, but was outbid on all but 3 lots. (Nowadays, in the age of telephone and internet bidding, you are not so much at the mercy of floor bidders when bidding from afar). Anyway, the appeal of this coin (lot 14 in the sale) and its provenance, was nice compensation for being outbid on so many other interesting coins. It is the I795 dated variety (with a capital I instead of the digit 1 in the date). Variety C-1. Bowers graded it VF30 back then, and I would guess that still applies, but would like to hear your opinions. The coin has a nice, fairly even tan colour and no major surface issues.

Wonderful, wonderful piece. I can't help with the grading but I definitely like the surfaces and the provenance. Thanks for posting!

Surface of your coin is truly incredible. Also, I like sharpness of details, especially Liberty face. Amazing coin.

Another great coin from your collection GERMANICVS, they just keep coming I would agree with VF-30, the coin has a weak strike so it might be higher.

very attractive.
Has the verdigris been the same since purchase? [on the 9 in the date]
Or has it increased?

Very nice piece, solid for the grade and might grade higher if submitted now. Maybe this variety comes better-struck than most, but the strong rims and sharp reverse (especially the center) certainly seem above average. The surfaces are reasonably smooth and the light staining and verdigris do not hurt the eye appeal. The vast majority of Liberty Caps are so worn, damaged, or poorly-made that it is a real treat to see such a beauty. For comparison, I bought this variety C-5a piece last year, graded NGC XF-40. The portrait detail is a bit stronger than on your piece but the rims are incomplete (and the planchet clipped at 10:00) and the center reverse is much softer. Maybe the broken reverse die had some responsibility for that weakness. No pole, but the same letter "I" was used for the date. Again, your coin is lovely and you can't beat a Norweb provenance. Congrats!

Great coin GERMANICVS! Yup, I agree with VF30 as well. You'd be surprised how many TPG's would call this VG or F.

Thank you, all for your comments. I remember the lot following this was a Farouk 1795 which I really wanted, and which I missed by only one bid. Jaobler, that is simply a beautiful Half Cent you have there. The obverse strike is well executed, the color is nice and even, and I do find the reverse is also well struck. The slight edge weakness does not bother me - we must remember how, and with what means these coins were struck. In short- a nice C5a and congratulations on your coin. I hadn't really noticed the spot of verdigris on my example - the pictures tends to magnify every minute defect and detail. I may consider a tiny drop of verdi-care.

GERMANICVS - Thank you, thank you, thank you - for sharing your incredible collection with us here at CCF! Always a treat to see what coin you'll post next, it seems they are all jaw droppers. I agree with VF30 on your Half Cent, and Norweb provenance? WOW! Just fantastic. A Farouk owned coin would be pretty cool too!
