I don't see any compelling reason to pick up one of these. That's too much of a premium over gold spot, and let's face it this is likely destined to become nothing but a bullion coin. Personally I would rather put my money to use on a nice 19th century classic gold coin. Or even a low mintage (under 10,000) 1st spouse gold coin. That's just my opinion.

The sales price has posted and it came in at $1240. Not too bad. Gold under $1300 this week set the price at $1240/each.

Wow, I couldn't disagree with this any more than I do. Nothing but bullion? Sure, it will have more mintage than, say, the First Spouse coins, but how many collectors actually care about the First Spouse coins? I predict the high premium (and the high cost of gold in general) will keep this from overselling in the first place and there will be huge demand for it in years to come.

I think there will be some initial enthusiasm for this issue, and then there may or may be a fall off. I guess if you're unsure, and want to make sure that you're not going to lose money you could just wait on the sidelines until they announce they're cutting off sales, look at the production numbers and decide last minute whether or not to take the plunge.

In 2021 it will be the 75th anniversary of the Roosevelt dime. Maybe they could issue that one in gold. I think most of us could afford that one, assuming gold isn't $5,000 an ounce.

I'm in the "waiting room" where I've been since about 5 seconds after they opened ordering and I have 1 hr 43 minutes to go. At one point I had only 58 minutes to go, but that bumped up. I guess some people went to lunch.

JFK coin seekers mob Philly mint
http://www.philly.com/philly/news/P...seekers.html

Quote:
It was a mob scene, though an orderly one, this morning at the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia. Hundreds of people, almost all of them working for private coin dealers, filled the sidewalks along Fifth Street between Arch and Race streets, hoping to purchase a 50th anniversary commemorative Kennedy half-dollar made of ".9999 fine, 24-karat gold," to quote the mint.

Wow $400 to stand in a line. Is it the special labels that these coins will be eligible for and first strike designations that makes this profitable for coin dealers?

I got into the site at 1:13 EDT and took me about 2 minutes to fully place my order. I made one mistake which was trying twice to sign in first before going to the waiting room which proved to be unnecessary and burned maybe 10 seconds. Don't know what I could do to get in faster so I could maybe get my wait time down to under a half hour. My experience here was very similar to the HOF coins except the ordering took a bit longer as I was ordering more coins through all the options.

My order is shown as "on hold." Anyone know specifically what that means?
