I've seen quite a few 1963 sets, but I've never seen a nickel toned as beautiful as this. This is from an unopened, all original set. It's really hard to capture in a picture, but the toning IMO is amazing. Both obv and rev, the "background" is a beautiful blue and the head and memorial are gold. Enjoy! coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 08/19/2007 7:51 pm I've heard the yellow color is caused by sulfur. But I always associated that with sulfur in the air. But yours is still sealed. So that theory is out. Report this Post to the Staff

Metalman LOL! OK, upon closer inspection, I think I see the source of the toning....those little black specs in the pics seem to actually be on the surface of the coin. Looks like the mint got some crud in there! Tonight I'm going to open the cent and the Jeff for closer inspection. I'll post some even better pics once I get that plastic out of the way. I think I'm going to try some acetone and/or methylene chloride if those black spots are on the surface as I suspect. That shouldn't effect the toning at all, right? Once that's done, I've got some airtites to put these in for safe keeping. Lincoln Cent Lover! cpfull Pillar of the Community United States 603 Posts	Posted 08/20/2007 6:09 pm I don't think its the spots, I have a 61 set I put in airtites and the nickel looks similar to yours, and I don't remember seeing any black spots on it. I will try to get some scans tonight when I get home. I certainly wouldn't try to remove the spots unless you were absolutly sure the toning would be unaffected. Report this Post to the Staff

You can clearly see the crud left behind from the mint. It's hard to believe they'd leave that on there and package them like that.
