A 1817 sixpence - and a new die pair for my collection. All dies I've seen (3 obverses and 3 reverses) of this year seems to be made by the same engraver. It is somewhat a mystery that no milled counterfeit 1820 sixpence has shown up so far - counterfeit shillings and halfcrowns dated 1820 are common so one wonders why no sixpences seems to have been made?

These billon 10 centimes coins from Napoleonic France where extensively forged - fake and a real one for comparison

Probably 1 in 3 of surviving examples are contemporary forgeries - the best key to spotting the duds is they could never get Tiolier's "the engraver" signature right

@davidrj
The Napoleon 10 centimes looks very interesting. If there's so many counterfeits of this type it should make for an exciting study.

@Medieval
Is that a cast counterfeit? Obverse is same design as the Irish Bank Tokens of which I have a few counterfeit examples (both milled and cast).

This one was in the mail yesterday. A 1645 Charles I halfcrown (Eye mintmark). Outside my field really but the price was low (£13½ postage included). Wonder if its a cast from a slightly later period? - like late 17Ct just before the recoinage.

From the grainy texture I assume it is cast.

I'm mightily impressed by all these specimens, particularly the non-British ones.

However, I've never seen them listed for sale.

What is a reasonable price to pay for them ?

Prices vary extremely from issue to issue just like genuine coins. The British ones I collect are however in most cases cheaper than the genuine coins.

Necro bump? Okay I'll bite:

France 10 centimes, "1810 A"

This is much better than most contemporary fake 10 centimes of the era. Trouble is, Paris (mintmark A) didn't make 10 centime coins in 1810 (save possibly for 1-5 assay pieces; I have found conflicting reports).
