I had a woman bring in her dads "collection" and she had these 16 counterfeits. I think they are cool simply due to the work involved. She knows they are counterfeit and I would like to buy them as a "novelty" (show and tell) etc. What should I offer?

What is their composition (so far as you can tell)?

I would just tell her you would like to own these as part of an educational "show and tell" type display and ask her what price she would have in mind for them? At least it would be a place to start.

Well, they're obviously quite modern forgeries of a sort seen often in bazaars overseas. I frankly can't see much point to acquiring them. As for the "work involved" I rather doubt someone was hand engraving dies to make them.

I've cataloged almost every one of these on The Black Cabinet or have a specimen in the stacks somewhere.
As a novelty they can go for as high as $10 each (although they hardly do) but to a collector, even of counterfeits, they're only a few dollars a piece at best.

A quick look over: 1795 dollar - Uncatalogued, in stacks. 1877 Trade dollar - No specimen. 1865 washington - CF-S$1-1865-0001 1864 seated liberty - No specimen, but some specimens in the same run. 1873 Trade dollar pattern - likely CF-T$1-1873-0001 1872 Trade dollar pattern - either CF-T$1-1872-0001 or CF-T$1-1872-0002 1878 goloid - Uncatalogued, in stacks. 1851 "indian head" - CF-S$1-1851-0001 1804 dollar - No specimen, but I have the 1802 in that series uncatalogued in the stacks. 1799 dollar - Uncatalogued, in stacks. 1924 Peace dollar - Can't tell by the details, but possibly CF-S$1-1924-0001. Counterfeits of this year are common. 1906 liberty dollar - This one has several varieties but I only have one CF-S$1-1906/86P-0001 cataloged. 2 others are in the stacks. Can't make out the date on the silver eagle. All base-metal counterfeits. All worth only a buck or two each, if that.

I saw a flea market dealer selling copies like these last year. He priced them at $5, each. It's a fair guess that he paid about a third of that retail price, as he had a number of pieces, bought in bulk.

Steve -
When I do my new book Forgotten Coins I will have a chapter on modern fakes - I might as well reference your site!

Me? I wouldn't buy any of these. Why? My ancestors may consider these genuine and be tremendously embarrassed if/when they try to sell them. (Yes, I think that far ahead with my collection). I have 8 fake Seated Liberty dollars I acquired early in my collecting career, and have no idea what to do with them. I now have them in a separate drawer (away from my normal coin drawer) in a baggy wrapped with rubber bands with a big note: "FAKE". I would walk away. IMO, the fake coins are not worth it.

@colonialjohn - Please feel free. :-)
@Moe145 - You could always donate them to The Black Cabinet's stacks. Each one that comes in is cataloged and documented and then permanently kept out of circulation.

Steve, when you pass on, what guarantee do you have that they will not circulate? Do you destroy them? The only one I would consider counterfeit would be the Peace dollar, and most of the top row, though they are bad. The rest are novelties.

My LCS showed me several fake Seated and Trade dollars and I/2`s plus others. I remember when they use to require that copy had to be stamped on the coin and visible to be seen before purchase. I guess the Chinese or ? don't have to follow these rules. I Thieves and Cons
