Hello all,
I came across this one today in a lot I bought and was wondering a grade and as to what anyone thought about what ever is going on on the right side of the obverse.
Lamination / cracked die?

Thanks

That is really neat. I looks like a Retained Cud.

As far as grade I'm going to say MS63FB.
Rest in Peace

I think it is a planchet flaw, I feel like you can see under it a little which would eliminate the Cud possibility and support the lamination peel idea.

" Cud" is not an acronym.

Since there's shadow appearing at its' edge, I'm inclined to think it a lamination as well.

So how would this "lamination" affect a possible grade?

Approximate grade?

Thanks

I agree with lamination. I could be wrong, but some people prefer these to a "normal" coin, and would probably pay a little more. Others see it as a defect. I think TPGs consider them "details" coins.

It looks like it could be MS-63 (quite possibly FB).

The strike appeared weak in the motto and the peripheral around the device. I would grade it as AU-53 to AU-58, not sure about the FB. I'd like to see the edge of the coin, it could be lamination or possibly planchet crack error, but most likely is lamination. For this I think it subtract the value rather then adding it, if the piece have actually fall off, that would be cool error coin!
Rest in Peace

I think it's a planchet crack . looks deeper than lamination peel.

I don't collect this series, but in general, these defects/errors add value for me. I like having these types of errors in my collections.
