My mom passed away in 2004, and her coin collection lay safely stashed away in my closet until 2 weeks ago. She was an avid gold hunter and coin collector for many years. I really have just skimmed the surface of what she has collected, and started by organizing my very own stash of coins, particularly cents. For 15 years I filled a large glass water jug full of copper cents. Or so I thought. I halfway new there was a change in 1982 according to my mom, but at the time it didn't sink in, until I started research. Well, I wanted MY copper coins so I just finished today separating all of them and looking for rare cents. Approximately 20,000 cents later and only 2 possible rare cents. I've already done 2 posts with the possible finds. One was a dryer cent 1980. The other was a 1968 D that was machine doubled. Oh well, I learned quite a few things in the process! I plan to organize my moms collection a bit more and add to what she already has:) I miss my mom everyday, so this will be a way for me to feel close to her. If I find anything of interest I will for sure share with everyone! I look forward to being part of the coin community! Carol My beautiful mom

Welcome aboard. Love your mom's hair. You came to the right place for help with your coins. Take your time going through them and post some pictures and some questions. Tons of great information in the left hand column if you want to look around. Coins with sentimental value are best. I have lots of coins, but one of my favorite coins will always be the 1951 Franklin half dollar my dad gave me when I was like 7 - 8 years old. He picked the 1951 because that was the year my mom was born. He picked that half because it is absolutely gorgeous (but not photographed ever, yet). Still have it in the Capital Plastics holder that it came into my life. 35 years or so later and I still have never opened that thing up. Sticks out like a sore thumb in my box of Halves in 2x2 holders. Sore thumb isn't right, maybe a shooting star. Good luck with the treasure hunt. Enjoy the memories that come with it.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome! It feels great to be among others who value coin collecting.
BuckeyeCoinguy, thank you for sharing about the special memories with your father. I agree, the coins become more cherished when a loved one was involved. I will pass the collection on to my son someday. I'm a jewelry designer, and when a special coin stands out to me that my mom collected, I will make a sentimental necklace to wear it close to my heart.
Good luck on your search everyone!
Carol

If you have 20,000 cents, chances are there are more than two collectable ones in the mix. There may not be any extremely rare ones, but there might be. Learn what to look for and go through them again, after all, the search is most of the fun!

Hi everyone! Thank you for the warm welcomes!! Thanks so much for the link cwb! I did run into that site on my phone when researching. It seems to have more detailed info on my computer. I just ran across rare laminated cents on the site. I think I saw one of those! Can't remember though. It was way too many coins to look through! Before I started searching the coins, I studied for about a week, jotting down all possible rare coins to look for, such as the 1992 D " Close AM" etc. I haven't thoroughly gone through all my wheat backs and just put them together by year. Also, I have saved all 1982, separately, and need to go through those. The pre 1982 copper coins are back in my glass jug and I plan to go through those again. I'm sure you are right about missing some. I'm excited to cash in the ones I've gone through because I'm then buying some non searched through cents from an old timer who has saved them for years:) One of my mom's friends. He just wants the 1 cent value. Yay! I will study the site you provided a bit more in depth and add possible rare ones to my list. Wish me luck! Carol
