The S mints in general in the 70's appear to be more difficult to find. I for one have not been able to find a decent 73-S in circulation. I'll keep my eyes open for you.

If you mean circulated examples from change ,, I found a total of 8 in 5000 cents while searching for the Cent project .

Thats not a large number ,it will be interesting to see what the results are for any given date ,,when coppercoins can get the info assimilated.

The 73-S was only half as frequent in my search with a total of 4 found in 5000 cents searched for the project .

although I have found several dozen of each in all of my searching of cents its interesting to note the frequency which I did not do prior to the project count .

My rate is a bit higher than Metalman's. I've found 15 1971S and 18 1973S in 5000 cents searched. I'm in the Bay Area so maybe that accounts for the difference.

Apparently I don't...just went through a pile of 1971s I had and pulled out 15. None of them are red but they're in good shape. I had 6 of the 1973s. A link to the coins I'm looking for can be found in my signature line if anyone wants to trade.

The lack of 71S, 72S, etc is mainly due to several reasons.
1. Lots of people just save S mint cents thinking they are all rare
2. Lots of people think S Mint cents are all Proofs and save them just in case they are
3. Many know they are the last non proof cents made at the S Mint so they think some day they will be valuable and hoard them
4. From 71 to 74 the S Mint produced about 1/10th the amount of cents compared to P and D Mints.
5. Some get confused with the 70 small and large date S cents so they save all cents from the 70's just in case.

For the Cent Project I had the following:

From California area, 5000 cents:

68S: 7
69S: 11
70S: 22
71S: 14
72S: 52
73S: 25
74S: 10

From Shreveport, LA area, 5000 cents:

68S: 0
69S: 2
70S: 0
71S: 5
72S: 0
73S: 0
74S: 1

Clearly, there is a geographic bias. If you live in California, the S mint marked pennies will be easy to find. When I lived in Philly, searching through cents for more than 10 years, I had only accumulated about 30 68-74S coins.

Unfortunately, I threw all the coins back into circulation.

I live in Atlanta area...anyone on the west coast wanna trade a bank box of Lincolns?

I don't know what the shipping cost would be, but if anyone is interested, we can check into it...
