I'm starting to look into buying a large cent. I'm pretty new to all of this (ebay, large cents, coin collecting) and am in need of some help. This forum has been very useful to me in the past month and I'm really enjoying participating and learning. It would be great to tap into some of the knowledge you all have. I've located a coin and have made a tentative guess at grade, type, etc. I'd like to see how close I am - and maybe why/how I'm off. I'm not planning on bidding on this one - it's just for practice. The link is below, followed by my opinion. I hope it's ok to post this - if you would rather I post just the image I can do that too: http://cgi.ebay.com/1856-US-Large-C...de_W0QQitemZ230212546348QQihZ013QQcategoryZ11950QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting And here's what I think: 1856 slanted 5 liberty braided hair cent Grade F/VF - weird mark above head, nicks on rim, Cleaned (and badly)

I agree with your assessment. My first reaction as to the grade was a low VF but the obvious cleaning/polishing thats been done to this large cent would send me running.
I am glad to see you said you wouldn't be bidding on this cent.

Maybe ya'll are seeing something here I'm not. Definitely cleaned, but I don't see any sign of being retoned. As far as a grade goes, I'd say VF20, without taking in to account it's cleaned status. I'd pass on this one.

XF40 details, improperly cleaned or dipped.

I'd agree on XF-40 details. The photograph does no justice to the coin, however, making it look cleaned by that sickly pinkish/orangish cast. I don't know the seller at all, so have no way of knowing if he/she is a good photographer or not. The odd color could be the result of incorrect white balance setting on the camera...or it could be exactly what it looks like...the result of harsh cleaning with something like Brasso.

That is what we affectionately call a "KETCHUP" cent. dipped in vinegar, pickel juice. etc. The effect is the same. Will take along time to retone.

Now you know what Jeweluster does to copper. That thing hammered at $34 over market.

When I look at the conditions between the "F" and "A," behind the head, and under the bust, I see a paint job...aka, re-tone.

Hmmm...the worn parts match the fields...I wonder... And there's a huge ding in the obverse for good measure. It doesn't deserve a grade.
