I love the old Photo Certificates with their detailed grade breakdowns and separate grading of each side of the coin. This particular one is an 1881-S Morgan (placed in an airtite instead of the flip.) I'll attach seller pictures first (without the cert pics), followed by what it looks like in hand.

Edit: EDS VAM-20 "Poxy Eagle", I2/R4

How do you think ANACS graded this Morgan (26 years ago?)

#1 - Seller Pictures (coin only)

1881-S-Morgan-Dollar,-ANACS-Photo-Certificate,-Grade-It!

1881-S-Morgan-Dollar,-ANACS-Photo-Certificate,-Grade-It!

#2 - Coin In Hand Pictures

Note: Picture #4 of the obverse was purposely taken with full on direct fluorescent lighting, which makes the blemishes look way worse than they do in-hand, but brings out the strike.

Let's get the CCF Verdict.

Some of what looks like "scuzz" is magnified because the reverse is fully mirrored and the obverse partially so; part is a light blush of rose toning, and part is some sort of white blotchier stuff with what looks like a fingerprint. I might do a (very) quick acetone & distilled water rinse, but I am concerned about dulling the mirror effect if I do so.

Edit: Just put it under the scope and confirmed it's an EDS VAM-20 S/S "Poxy Eagle" (eagle is covered with tons of little raised dots), I2/R4. This VAM is a bit scarcer in EDS than M/LDS, but not sufficiently interesting enough for anyone outside of us VAM addicts to really care. :P

I am worried the haze on the obverse might actually be pvc damage and I don't think can be gotten rid of. It's a shame because otherwise it's a really nice coin. Great looking reverse.

Removed from air-tite, quick acetone and distilled water.

It is apparently not a haze, but rather silver patches showing through rose-colored blotchy toning.

This photo is extremely processed in photoshop to show the nature of the toning:

Just for grins, I ran it through my Photoshop "Fake-A-DMPL" filter: (notice the fact that the blue towel the coin sits on is completely obliterated? good way to find fake DMPL's.)

Try giving it a quick 2-3 second bath in ammonia, then rinsing with distilled water.

Does the photo cert show the same haze/toning the obverse now shows?
