Since we already have roll hunter-specific pennies, nickels and halves threads running, I thought I'd start this thread on Quarters. I also just started one on dimes, too.
I personally don't search quarters as I feel it is a waste of time, but maybe those of you who do search could share your finds, especially if you find silver.
Also, it would be of interest if anyone tallies every coin in rolls they search. I'm interested in knowing about whether the 65-69 coins are getting harder to find. Edited by mycrob

I'm curious if there are any quarter roll hunters out there and what you find. How many $$ of quarters do you need to get all the released State Quarters? Are some of the State Quarters more scarce than others? Are 82 and 83 P quarters hard to find? |

I seam like every non SQ I get is a 67 83 or a 95  |

Are some of the State Quarters more scarce than others? Are 82 and 83 P quarters hard to find?" The quarters depend on what part of the country you're in. P's and D's can be tough in some areas. In most parts of the country you should be able to complete a type set of the coins by just getting enough that every coin will statistically appear about twice (+# in set). With 40 billion quarters in circulation and the lowest states mintage at a quarter billion then figure about eleven rolls will do it. You might be mssing a few later dates if you're in the wrong area of the country since ity takes time for them to move around. The '82 and '83 quarters are easy. They made them in large quantities. They can be excrutiatingly difficult to find unc and much harder to find choice but there are loyts in circulation. I save any coins of these dates that are nicely made and have little wear. They are getting less common in grades over VF. Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

By the way, it's getting harder and harder every year to put a date set of the old quarters together. Some of the dates like the '68-D were already getting down to only about 50 million remaining and now there are collectors pulling these out and making them appear much tougher. It'll take about 50 rolls for a date/ mm set probably and four or five times that number to have an attractive specimen of each date. Many of the early dates are not really available above a nice F any longer. You might find something like a '71 in an ugly VF but not a nice attractive VF.
Of course a few coins do get into circulation from mint sets or rolls so it's not impossible to find such coins. Some dates are much easier because they wear so well or were released late. The '72-D, for instance, isn't too tough in nice XF.

I recently sold some 1982s and 1983s that I pulled from my change jar. They were a mixture of P and D. The buyer paid more than 3x face value (including s/h).

I've had it with quarters. Back in the late 70's I fell for that stupid Bicentennial Quarter hoarding thing. I ended up with hundreds and hundreds of dollars worth. A freind of mine had thousands of dollars worth. Not long ago at a few coin shows I asked if anyone wanted them. One dealer said he'd give me $0.24/each. In other words, no one wanted them. So they all ended up in a bank. I lost the interest and I lost the interest in quarters too.

Bicentennials also sell at a premium. Just not with dealers apparently.

I have a small hoard of 76 quarters- maybe 150. I was thinking, wrongly, they'd be worth something someday. Has anyone seen 76 in cirulcation lately? I haven't gotten one in several years. However, I haven't been getting large numbers of rolls- just got 10 rolls last year to try filling some of the holes in my State Quarters. Edited by mycrob

They were saved in enormous quantities. What wasn't saved was almost everything else.

Being a "half hunter"....you see hundreds of bicentennial halves......I throw them ALL back (and was advised to do so value wise by forum members)
I have always kept a lookout for bicentennial quarters though....... I don't know why, but I have not thrown these back yet. I have about 3/4 of a roll of them in various grades. Carl has a good point as to the value, but one roll will not take up space and who knows .......in 30 years.....well......who knows.
I haven't done much quarter roll searching, but if I did, I expect i'd end up with a WHOLE BUNCH OF BICENTENNIAL QUARTERS TOO !

The 76 quarters show up in circulation around here quite a bit. I probably pull one every 4 months or so. I still save them even though I realize that they aren't worth too much. Eventually, I'll put together an AU roll and dump them back into circulation. That's what I did with the JFK halves. It seemed to satisfy my need to hoard (in case they're worth something someday) and the reality that my wife would kill me if I left hundreds of dollars sitting around unused in some drawer.  |

The 68D 72 74D are pretty scarce for me,I find several 76 quarters.

Mycrob,On the State Quarters I found the Maine ,Florida and Wisconsin a little tough.I now have all of them except the Nebraska D.. |

I get a bicentennial out every two months or so. And yes I still keep them. I'm trying to make a roll. As one coin dealer said, if they won't be worth something at least they are causing peple to save a little bit, me included.
