Where is the value in older coins that are not of good quality and are not silver or buffalo? I did a search and found several 1940 nickels but them being poor grade so, why keep them?

There is not a lot of value in coins of this type. I keep them because they are old rather than because they are valuable.
Rest in Peace

Here are 7 that I pulled and have questions on. From top left there is...
1983d with discoloration
1977 with discoloration
1941d
1979 with color bar
1940
1964d with dark ring
1946 with color stripes

Are any worth keeping and why?

How do you store coins like this? Is it worth using a cardboard holder or should I just throw them in a pile in the bottom or the safe?

I usually do not keep such samples. If you do not like them, why not keep them. You keep what you like. Financially, it may not be worthy of the storage cost.

I would keep those. Since they are more common I would keep them in a plastic tube (roll).

I keep everything 1960 and prior for nickels. I keep them in a plastic tube as others have indicated.

These coins will never be worth more than face for the most part. I keep 1959 and older that I find in tubes, just because I like to. If you like them, buy a nickel tube or two and save them, after all they are your nickels.

The only reason to save them is because you like them. They will never have much, if any, value above face in our lifetime.

Isn't the '41 worth about 50 cents?
