I think the thing that bothers me most about the low mintage is that it was so much lower that the mintage of the 2015 gold high-relief coin that these medals are based on. That just seems completely backwards. I missed out just because I forgot, recently moved from TX to CA and am still not used to mint products coming on-line at 09:00AM. I will pick them up after-market and just take the price hit to complete the series (already have the gold version).
There was some speculation a few pages back that the low mintage of these medals may have been due in part to the fact that they use the same planchets for these as for the ASEs.
I didn't personally bother to corroborate that claim but it's certainly possible....though it does seem like a particularly pathetic reason if it is in fact the reason the US Mint is claiming such a low mintage for these silver medals.
Somehow I doubt that even 50,000 more planchets to be used for te Amer. Liberty medal would have been a problem for the US Mint which apparently has a massive surplus of ASE's in stockpile.
I haven't been following this very much. But, dang! What a beautiful design, front and back. I guess it would have made too much sense to revamp the ASE using this design.
Here is a COMPLETED SALE for a "First Day of Issue" version of the medals..and we know how rare first day of issue coins are (all of them that presently exist)
So this distinct rarity sold for a reasonable price I guess:
And there were EIGHTEEN bidders with SIXTY bids. So either it was a shill party or there were a lot of folks that really, really wanted to throw away that much money.
Now, I can understand getting caught up in the excitement of a bidding war and spending more than you had planned on an auction, but that's just crazy.
