I haven't seen any chatter for a couple weeks on the Mint's "American Liberty 2016 Silver Medal". Does anybody know any more than we did since the last thread? Could it be a medallic version of last year's High Def $100 coin? A secret commem? Can't be the unreeded ASE because it says "medal". Right?

I don't believe there is anything "secret" about the medal at this point. It will feature the same design as last year's $100 gold American Liberty, High Relief coin. The coin-specific inscriptions mandated by law for US coins will be removed as it truly is a medal. It will be struck on the same one-ounce 0.999 fine silver planchets as are used for American Silver Eagles (ASEs). It will be struck in proof at West Point and San Francisco. The missing piece of info at this point is the release date. That is still unknown at this time.

Thanks for answering, Commems. I haven't heard or read of those descriptions until now. So if I follow you correctly, there will be a standard high relief and two proofs (one from S and the other, W). It makes perfect sense and I welcome them all!

I would prefer uncirculated (business strike) to proof.
commems - can you please provide a link to this information? Thanks!

I might be interested in this. It is definitely in my budget, unlike the gold coin.

I thought this one was supposed to be an ASE with edge lettering. Are they going to squeeze 1 oz of .999 silver with a decent design into a 3/4 sized UHR design.

One of the committee members (Gary Marks) posted this on his Facebook page. I'm sure he wouldn't mind me sharing it..... I am super excited to have just found out that production of the 2016 Liberty High Relief Silver Medal is currently underway at the U.S. Mint. During my tenure as the chairman of the CCAC (the Mint's design review committee) I worked hard along with members of my committee to revive images of "Liberty" on U.S. coins and medals. This silver medal is the result of our efforts. I am super excited now because it was so difficult to make this happen and there were numerous times I was almost certain we had failed or that the program was headed in a hopelessly wrong direction. I am most excited that Mint leadership finally followed the Committee's recommendation to produce this medal as a silver proof (rather than an uncirculated version). It also appears they accepted the Committee's recommendation to produce the medal at both the San Francisco and West Point Mints and to use mint marks designating those mints. I am very pleased also that plans to produce another silver Liberty medal are in the works for 2017. Hopefully these Liberty medals will become an annual series (also a Committee recommendation). It is my further hope that collectors will support this program with strong sales as a demonstration to the Mint's leadership team and key Members of Congress that "Liberty" does indeed sell. Ultimately I want Miss Liberty to be restored to our circulating coinage. A successful medals program might help give that challenging goal a much needed push. Congratulations are in order to the following artists who together created the artwork for this medal: Justin Kunz, obverse designer; Phebe Hemphill, obverse sculptor; Paul C. Balan, reverse designer; and Don Everhart, reverse sculptor. Outstanding work all!

I am glad I tuned into this thread ... What will the production limit be? Household limit? Price range? I will be looking forward to having a set of these in my collection. And if helps support a cause to get Liberty back on our coins, sign me up. Maybe we should start a movement to put the last design of Liberty on each denomination. Well ..with a little modern updating. We should have Indian Head cent - Liberty in feathered headdress Liberty head nickel - a little updating the design would be good Winged Liberty dime - Mercury dime Standing Liberty quarter - no changes needed Walking Liberty half - same as above. I think the American public would love this. And what collector would not love having modern proof sets of classic coins. Then the mint could go back to a design change every 25 years.
