With all the talk of pocket pieces on this forum, I have been thinking of a cool coin to have as a pocket piece. I came up with this one a month or so back. It's old and the mints first commemorative. Sweet, now I just have to find one in decent shape for cheap. As luck would have it...at my local coin club auction tonight...voila...an honest piece. No major damage, has a rim hit at 10 o'clock on the Obv. It was mine for $10 Removed it from the 2x2 and put it right in my pocket. Fun stuff and my oldest commemorative in my collection Any words of advice for a first time pocket piece holder? Sorry the images are sideways. No matter what I do I can't get it to rotate correctly. Thanks Dan

Congrats on your first pocket piece.
I think I will have to do an update on mine this weekend if I have time.

My only advise is don't lose it to a rogue recliner chair. Good pocket piece choice.

It's a nice piece, when in hand and you flip it, do it only where it won't get rim damage, like carpet ect. If you don't want to wear it down so fast don't mix it wit other coins. now and then gently wash it with dish soap dand share it with young Collectors, use it to focus on your ongoing collection, carry it with you where ever you go, DO NOT USE JEWELERY CLEANER on it, I tried and oooohhh did not look good but it is your coin, if hard times hit take it out and look at it, you will find a way, it's like your best friend in a pocket

That would be fun to carry. America's first commemorative coin.

I have no personal experience in carrying a pocket piece .. will add that you have selected an outstanding example.
Looking forward to your update photos as time passes.

Congrats One50...it's a very affordable coin to get that I recommend to anyone who asks me about what 19th century coin to start off their collection.

Very nice! I'm not really into older coins but I really like this one. Looks to be in really nice condition and the fact that it's the mints first commemorative is even better.
Just to have better mental image what size does this coin closely resemble?

Quote: Just to have better mental image what size does this coin closely resemble? It is a half dollar. Same size as a traditional half dollar (except the larger size Bust halves)

Here is my 3 week update. It's gone. I think my life is a little to active for a pocket piece right now. I went camping in the Adirondacks this week with the family. I had it all week. I had it when we packed up and left for home. I double checked at the first rest stop. My mind is fuzzy when we arrived home as to what may have happened. I checked all my pants today, the dryer, the washer and the hamper. Checked the car twice. Used my metal detector to retrace my steps in the yard. So if anyone finds this coin between Utica NY and Cleveland OH, let me know. If I find it in the future, I will post it's resurrection photo. Thanks

Sorry to hear of your loss. I misplaced my MNS medal back when it was the only coin in my pocket and started to carry my Ellis Island in it's place. When I finally found my medal I switched back. When I won my Silver Eagle on a wager with a friend on a non coin forum I decided to carry it with my medal and decided to throw the lightly circulated (2 months) Ellis Island in with the bunch. Then like tattoos it just got out of control with 4 dollar sized coins, 2 quarter sized coins, and 2 dimes. Get another pocket piece and your Columbus will show up again in a month or 2
