I paid $25 each for a couple of these barber sets they were selling at the bank--in very circulated condition--none of the word "LIBERTY" can be seen on the coins but the dates/denominations etc are clear. This has a 1905 half dollar, 1897 quarter, 1907 dime, 1904 nickel, and a 1902 IHC. Do you think I paid too much for these? Thanks for your opinion! Gussyboy1

GreySheet bid for those coins is about 20 dollars - in G-4, I am not sure these would all qualify for that grade. The 1905 barber half is a little better date though, GreySheet bid is (was in early Jan.) 16.00 in G-4. I guess not too bad, but I would not expect much more than melt for the silver. ( In a year this might be a great buy ! ) Personally, as a rule, I avoid these types of sets. Alot of these sets contain cleaned or very low grade coins, nothing wrong with maybe cherry picking from these types of things , but I can't imagine your local bank having any accidental rarities from a local (or national) dealer. I love the Barber coins, and it is always evident that they circulated alot !

Given the condition of the quarter and half, I would have to say that you did overpay somewhat. Barber coins are easy to find in FR-VG grades. Once the condition drops below G4, they are only worth their silver content (which is lower due to the amount of wear). Overall, unless you cherrypick a set with better dates, I would suggest looking for coins in solid G4 or higher if you are going to purchase sets like these. You also want to watch for cleaned coins. I think the IHC in this set has been cleaned. The nickel, dime, quarter, and half look original. Do you know what to look for when grading Barber coinage? If not, I can post some grading tips for you.

The red and blue question is kinda like "Honey, do you like my new hair-do ,and do I look fat in this dress?" MAN answers "yep!"
